Hi I live in South Jersey, spend alot of time hunting for quartz in Cape May. I have some smokey quartz stones that I would like cut by a gemcutter. Does anyone know of anyone? Marian ps As I'm typing I'm listening to my first batch of quartz whirring around in my cheapo tumbler, it's soothing...

Hi Marian, Welcome to the forum. Best to post questions in the general rock forum, they'll get answered quicker that way. I totally agree, the sound of the tumblers rolling is a soothing sound.

I have a tumbler full of them right now, I will take pics when they are done. The coolest thing is that the stones I find in cape may are so diverse, I've found tons of quartz (of quartz lol) but also hematite, fossils bones and teeth, beryl, and I also found what I believe to be a piece of turqouis (sp). Also some of the finest sea glass anywhere, the pieces are so big!!! I love those cape may diamonds though! Marian

hey john, We usually hit the beach right in front of the cement ship. I found out from a local that the best spots are away from the ship. During storms the waves smash the quartz into the cement ship and fractures the them, so there is very little usable quartz on the beach closest to it. I've found some awsome "diamonds" about a 1/4 mile in either direction down sunset beach. Have fun, I love that beach! Marian
ps Oh yeah the best time to go is right after a major storm preferable between the month of November and January...

I sleep with my rock tumbler in my bedroom. It soothes me to sleep.

sounds like fun. I just wonder if anyone ever goes up the Delaware and hunts for the quartz before it has a chance to roll down to the jersey shore? Just trying to learn something today.

good question, I've never done that but I'd imagine the quartz would be MUCH larger than one would find on a cape may beach. I'd put the tumbler in my room if it wasnt for my hubby putting his foot down lol! Marian
