Lol big time Stefan, I couldn't resist that opal wood and lace either! Just had to buy a mixed box. Well, at least I only bought one box. (this week) The 12 step program here starts with 4 weeks coarse grit... Joe

Here it is for all the new mwmbers: The 12 steps: 1- I will buy no more rock (unless it is on sale or it is something I have to have) 2- I will be honest about my purchases (which I'm not supposed to make any way) Unless I think I can get away with it. 3- Rocks have feelings too so when I do make purchases I will respect them and not tuck them away (unless I did not follow 1 and 2) 4- I will not hold the place I bought the rocks from responsible for my inability to NOT purchase rocks. 5- Rocks are hard and can be used to kill me (as in "if you buy one more rock I'm gonna STONE YOU TO DEATH") 6- STONING is not what you think. 7- You can't eat rocks 8- You can sleep with rocks- but it is not the same 9- Precious gems were once rocks- and can be used as leverage. 10- Buying Lap equipment is not the same as buying rock. 11- Having A specific project in mind does not count as making impulse purchases. 12- All rock is good- it came from nature- and can therefore be used to cleanse one's soul!

Very good. I'm going to have to post that above my tumblers. Either that or wrap it around my charge card. Number 11 is great. I NEVER make impulse purchases. All my purchases have a specific project in mind... umm, like tumbling rough for next winter. Well, you didn't say how specific the project had to be. Happy 12 steppin'. Joe(I claim the 11th step as my defense from now on)

Welcome to the Forum Joe, This definitely hasn't been a slow hobby for me. I always jump into everything head first and want to learn it all at once. I can see I will be learning the rest of my life and I'll probably never even hear the names of all the rocks available, let alone collect them all. I have more now than I can tumble, slab, cab and make jewelry from. Trish

Thank you Trish. Also thanx for helping me to learn and enjoy more by sending all those cool "extras"! It is a heckuva lot of fun. It's good we have the Net, I wouldn't get nearly as much out of this hobby without all the info available. I wonder if the younger people appreciate it? We had to go to the library (or get Mom to drive us) every time a new interest popped up. Info was limited back then, now it's overload:). Now we have to learn to sort thru it to ONLY get the info we want. Oh well, I'm glad folks like you are here, It's fun. Joe

Yea it is- I see Pho selling a 1/3 HP motor on here for a very cheap price and I think- damn I gotta have it- Could use that for something- Then I start thinking about his pet wood and think Damn should just get the motor and some wood- THen I remember HOW FAR behind I am in tumbling and cabbing and cutting- I pulled out some box of Bubblegum agates on Monday- They were supposed to go in the tumbler- and I forgot I even had them- then I was looking through the Pet wood I have- Started slicing some up and forgot that I was supposed to cab some up for my sister- then I got to thinking about the rocks Sam (her friend) sent me and I was gonna start some of them too- and then there is the stuff from Arkie- well If you got any of that stuff then You know that DESIRE does not even begin to describe it! Oh dang I'm just gonna spend all weekend down in the shop working rocks-

Yea- My wife was yelling at me last night- I went down to the shop as soon as I got home- Came up for dinner- than went right back down- She starts yelling at me at 9:00 to come up and go to bed- Finially around 10:00 I emerged and got this You got to work in the morning rotine- Well she is right! But I'm thinking of putting a couch down there so I can just sleep in the shop!

Uhhh, Stefan, that might not be the best of ideas. Really. Loneliness is not fun. I love your spirit, but I'm already alone. You gotta get the wife into the hobby. Has she tried wirewrapping or some of the other creative uses of stone that are mentioned here? Maybe you could draw her in that way. Or just keep working (part time) on some cool stuff that she would like to have and wear. Or help her find her own hobby. One that doesn't require the use of your new spare bedroom! I don't want to start any more trouble here for you!! Play it cool friend. Joe

I don't have a couch down there and like Joe I doubt it's a good idea Stefan!Been married for 30 years and I wouldn't think of tryingit. We're both retired and are together all the time, and I'll disappear for 8 to 10 hours down there but she checks up on me every so often. Just thinks I'm turning into a rock troll!

Oh not to worry- My wife is a Giudance Counslor- and has the summers off (for the most part) She is a quilting fiend (actually cranked out 5 quilts for Christmas last year) and was only reminding me of work in the morning- We actually Have many common intersts and she just likes to get on about my hobbies once in a while- She actually came down to the shop over the weekend- and picked out the stones that need to be drilled and made into necklaces!

Sounds cool, Stef. Ok, how about stone quilts (really heavy) or yarnwraps on rocks! Joe
