Hi: Very new to the Hobby. About 2 1/2 month. I'm 72 and no major problems. Is there any place in MS where I can find some neat rocks to tumble? What about MS rock shops? None in Meridian area phone book. Remember I'm just getting started. :

Howdy Drupe,
Checked my agates notebook for Mississippi locations. Didn't find too much info on collecting. Best areas seem to be in the southern part of the state. Almost any exposed gravel deposits in that area can have good petrified palm fiber and banded agates in pastel tones. Harrison County in particular was mentioned esp around the cities of Naches, Georgetown and Hattiesburg. Sounds like any gravel pits or quarries, roadcuts or gravel bars where rock is exposed should be pretty interesting. Good luck...mel

Saber52 Thanks, guess I'll have to go a little further south. I've looked in the stream beds around here and in the road cuts but the only thing I find are very soft red sandstone, at least I think its sandstone. It breaks very easily. I haven't tried to tumble any of it but I think it might be too soft. Do you know anything about East Alabama as far as the rock possibilities goes? Your info is really appreciated. ;D

Drupe: Man, I sure don't have many notes on that part of the country. Only thing I've even read on that part of the country is about Jackson County , Alabama where the paint rock agate nodules come from. Don't even know what part of the state Jackson County is in except it must be near Tennessee and Kentucky because similar agates occur there....mel

Kim: ;D What part of the state are you in? I'm in Kewanee - East Central right at the Alabama border. What do you have for sale or can you tell me a good place to look? I just got started and bought some rocks on Ebay also got some Emeralds and Amethysis. For my first tumbles they came out pretty well. I'm going to walk some railroad tracks and see what I can find. Don't know much about what I'm looking at but I can learn. I used to hunt a lot but don't ever remember seeing rocks in the streams or fields except that red sandstone around here. I can travel to other areas of the state or Western AL. So if you have any ideas let me know.

drupe here's what i have forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=buysell&thread=1119766084&page=1 . i had to go look on a map to see where kewanee is. you got some damage there did you not? i have found nowhere at all to find any hunting spots for rocks in ms but when i went to the petrified forest in flora, ms they have a map showing petrified wood is found in every county except 2 in ms (i'm in 1 of those 2 counties lol). my neighbor says he was hunting near grenada, ms and ran across alot of petrified wood but this was before he got into rocks and he doesn't remember where he was : ( . read this thread about alabama rockhounding forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=1111896620&page=1and don't discount driveway gravel in ms. i have tumbled some that turned out beautiful! the petrified forest sells rough rock if you travel around jackson much. william c. told us about a rockshop in ocean springs and i went there - lots of specimans - some tumbling rough. they were right on hwy 90 on the coast however so i have no idea how they fared. check the buy, sell, trade section to see other members who have things for sale and the vendor section to see places people are very pleased or displeased with. glad to have another ms rockhound join. hope this helps. kim

Hey Drupe, Welcome to the forum!! Another good place is to go to your local Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot etc, anyone who carries rock for landscaping. Some have found some very nice rock in those bags.

Hey Kim:
Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday - had to go out of town. Can you make me up a care package of Yellow Jasper, Rainvow Jasper and Green Jasper. 3 or 4 lbs of each. What ever amount you can fit in a USPS flat rate box.
Let me know the cost and I'll send you a check by return mail.
Is there anyway you might mark a piece of each so I can ID it before I tumble it? Remember I'm a rookie and any assistance helps.
Thanks in advance for all your past and present help. You can Email me and I'll send my mailing address. Thanks again,
drupe

Cher: Thanks for the suggestions. I've got a fairly large Koi pond and I've lined it with rock I purchased at Lowes. Thanks to you I have two barrels charged with possibilities running in coarse now.
Its kind of funny, that rock was right under my nose and I never thought about it till you mentioned it.

Krazydiamond: Good to hear from you. As I said I'm a real newbie but so far so good. I feel that this is a wonderful site for someone like me and I've already learned more than I knew before joining. I presently own a Dual Drum Rotary Tumbler by Chicago Electric Power Tools. So far so good, I'm happy with its performance. I can see how one could get carried away in this hobby. Thanks for the reply and hope to hear from you again Drupe
