Hi everyone,
I'm Dave, a complete novice to the scene. I live in Scotland. I have been "interested" in rocks for a while and never did anything about it. On a recent vacation to Turkey I found some interesting looking rocks on the beach and said they would look attractive polished....
And here I am looking for a tumbler (does any one know if the "Tumble Polisher CR2 Ref: 10-031" from Manchester Minerals is any good?) and cant wait to get started.
I live on the coast and have read posts about beach glass, I went and collected some today. Hooked already?
Dave.

welcome aboard dave. sorry cant help with ? - dont know that one. Lortone tumbler is what i recommend but that's here in the states. There are one or two brits here so they might be able to help you. Jack (Yorkshire) is the only one I can remember off the top of my head. Send him a PM - he would be the one to ask.

Thanks guys,
I'll try and PM the other Brits and see if anyone has any experience of the tumbler I like.
Cheers
Dave.

Welcome Dave! I remember that Jim Henson classic from the 80's! My GF has the theme song as a ringtone on her mobile I do a fair bit of beach glass & it's the perfect way to start & get hooked on the tumbling hobby! Just make sure to collect enough to almost fill the tumbler before starting & don't mix it with any rocks. It's a good idea to dig backward into some of the older forum threads as well since, as with most gems, you have to do some digging to find them If you have questions you will find most of us are eager to offer advice. Don't hesitate to ask! It's a good idea to research your first tumbler a fair amount before making a purchase to ensure you will be happy with it in the long run. I recommend a model with two barrels that can run separately. You may not think you need to have two barrels rolling right now but in a month or two you will wish you had another one! ;D We LOVE pictures here so if you don't have a digital camera handy, try to befriend someone who has one

welcome dave. i converted the grams and money over to u.s. to see what you were looking at. basically you are looking at a double 3 lb tumbler 220v for $153.53 u.s. WITHOUT barrels and shipping. you could order the lortone 33b from the u.s. WITH barrels and 220v for $83.50 u.s. (47.67 in your currency) at kingsley north but they charge a $30 u.s. penalty fee for ordering out of country so i'd e-mail shawn at the rock shed www.therockshed.com/tumbler4.html and find out how much it will cost you to get him to ship you a lortone 33b 220v. even with the shipping you are going to save money and get a great little tumbler. for what you are going to pay when you add in the barrels you might could get the lortone qt66 shipped over or 2 of the 33b's. sure be worth looking into. and here's a handy dandy conversion thing to convert the prices and weights with www.sciencemadesimple.net/conversions.html . shawn has a shipping calculator on his site so you can see just what it's going to cost - shipping weight will be 8-10 lbs (3.63-4.54 kg) per 33b tumbler. well that's my 2 cents : ) . kim

Also, if the line frequency is 55Hz instead of 60Hz, the barrels will turn a bit slower. I don't know if that's a bad thing or not, just thought i'd throw in my 2p...

Hey thats a great idea, I did look at it to begin with, then I guessed the shipping would kill me, I'll certainly give the guys at the rock shed a call and see what they can do for me.

Looking for a tumbler myself, I have heard Manchester Minerals are a good outfit from my OU tutor on my Geology Summer School this year, but if the price is right and they can deliver might just give them a try. Hoping to go jasper collecting next week up near Arbroath, apparently loads on the beach up there so we'll give it a go... JBN
