Hi!!! I’m new here and just wanted to say hi to everyone. My name is Dan and the DanL stands for Daniel as pronounced DanL like Danal Boone. I have been reading all of the posts and just now found the place for introductions. I am a novice to all of this and even as we speak have my first real load tumbling. I have always liked rocks though and collected them where ever I went. I didn’t and still don’t know what most of them are called but am learning. I like this board a lot! I has a wealth of info for the beginner and I want to express my appreciation for it. I live in East Texas near Lake Livingston. I am 52 years young and have been married to the same fine Lady for 30 of those years. I have one Daughter, 25 grown and gone. My hobbies are legion and I keep adding to them every year. I am skilled in most all of the manual trades and can make or repair almost anything. I own a small business repairing appliances and AC/Heating and also do carpentry, plumbing and Machine work on the side. I tent to be a bit long winded at times and am curious about almost everything.

Hi Dan, Welcome to the forum! You've definitely found the right place to learn and ask questions about most all aspects of tumbling and beyond. If you have any questions, post them over on the General forum (first one on the list) and you'll have answers before you can blink.

Hi Danl. Welcome aboard. Beware. This hobby will consume you! The other hobbies don't stand a chance. Joe

Welcome fellow texan hookem horns, 12th man, raiders are whatever you may be a fan of. I'm a tech man myself - GA Tech that is. Anyway, welcome to the board and I hope the rock finding is better in your neck of the woods than it is in dallas.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I have been able to get most of my questions answered so far by just reading. Being new to this I would have very basic questions and they have been well covered.
I live near Lake Livingston and the rock hunting here is great... If you like petrified wood anyway. It is so plentiful that I gather it in my yard along with aggets(sp) and all manner of river stones. Huricane Rita messed up the Dam and they have lowered the lake level by about 5 feet. Yesterday I went and gathered about a 5 gallon bucket of wood as I walked the newly exposed shore. There is even an opalized form that is found here if you are lucky that is real pretty. I haven't been lucky yet. LOL.
My Dad was a UT grad but I prefer the Aggies myself.

Welcome Danl and thanks for the tip. I was planning to head toward Madisonville real soon to look for more pet wood. Didn't know I could shorten the trip and go to Lake Livingston. Any recommendations, since public land doesn't really exist in Texas? Post some pix if you have any--as you can tell by reading, folks here love pix.
Hope you and yours fared well during Rita. And again, welcome.

Hi Dan
Welcome to this rock hounding site. I live somewhat close to you in Jasper so you aren't too far away. There is a rock shop east of Livingston on Hwy 190 at Indian Springs (about 8-10 mi east of Livingston). Lots of good 'stuff' there and the owner is very rock savvy...he knows his stuff!! Like you, lots of petrified wood here too. Again, welcome to this place. Lots of good info from some really nice people here.

The area around the 190 bridge over Lake Livingston right now is a great place to gather petrified wood. It isn't a matter of hunting as much as gathering. With the lake 5 feet down there is a huge shoreline. Just look for places where there are explosed rocks and a lot of them will be wood. Got a lot of nice slab type chunksthat are 4 or 5 inches long 1 or 2 inches wide and 1/4" thick. There are also some nice bigger pieces and scads of small tumbling sized pieces. The bigger pieces are more to the south west side and the slaps are more plentiful on the north west side. As long as the lake is down I am going to gather all that I can.
