I am new at this and know nothing. I only have one cheap rock tumbler working to tumble and shape a few emeralds and rubies bought on ebay. due to only having one tumbler and canister the rocks go in, I am not able to polish the stones. So I do something that most of u probably think I am sick for doing, spraying them with lacquer. It gives them a nice shine though. How do u cut and sdhape the stones? And is there a simple way to heat up the rubies and emeralds to give them a transparent look. All I know is it takes about 1500 degrees for about 24 hours according to one source. I read somethign about putting them in a bbq grill. does anyone know anything about this. and I need a tigers eye and two star sapphires, both only needs to b e small. where can i get those? email me at tmorris6654@yahoo.com with info please. HELP

Howdy,
I'll try to answer a few of your questions. Rubies and emeralds etc are mostly transparent or not. Never heard off heat treating making much difference except maybe to make a color change in some types of stone. Due to the hardness of these materials, they are probably best polished on a diamond lap or wheel. Several books are readily available on cabbing and faceting that describe the process way better than I could. Small tigereye and star sapphire stones are readily available through several suppliers online (Try e-bay or a google search) or listed in Rock and Gem magazine. Eloxite.com or Kingsley- North would probalby have these items in stock. Again just google them for more info.
