Hello Im new here and was thinking of getting my son a rock tumbler for Christmas. Im a little confussed on the rocks. Can you use any kind of rock(like ones in your back yard) or do they have to be special rocks? Thank you in advance for your time.

you can use most rocks, moonchild, depending on the hardness........where are you from and what kind of local rocks do ya got?
your son might like a "newbie" mix for his first run, they sell the top stuff for first timers at many places. it's a long and patient process, so it's nice to get good results to start and then experiment if you find yourself bitten by the bug.
good luck!

Welcome Moon
Tumblers often come with a small bag of rocks and enough grits to tumble that first batch. The rocks will be a little nicer than what you can pick up in Connecticut - some agates, petrified wood, etc.
I know you can get the Thumler Model T either as a tumbler only or with the kit.

Hi Moonchild, welcome to the forum. Make sure you don't get a kiddie tumbler, the plastic kind are just not worth it. Take some time to read through the posts here, it will help you understand more. Also, a good place to order things like rocks and grit is the Rock Shed, they are very helpful people.

I agree with Cher, I had a kiddie tumbler once and the stones chewed through the plastic within about 2 months of continuous use. On the other hand I have had my little Lortone running for 2 years straight with no problems at all!
