I know I have been on the board for a couple of months, but I though I would tell you a little about me. I have been collecting rocks since I was a little girl. I never really studied what I had. In the last year I have began learning more about rock and have been out collecting every weekend. I have so much fun and find some really neat stuff. I also have found myself at Estate Sales buying up rock by the boxes. My problem is, I still have a hard time identifying what I have. I have learned a lot but have so much more to go. I moved to AZ a few weeks ago and have decided to take some geology courses at the community College. I don't have any tools other than a dremel but I enjoy displaying my rock in rough with only a part of it polished. I like the before & after look in one piece. I am looking into purchasing a saw so I can cut some of my rock in half to achieve the look of the beauty both outside and in. Sounds silly, I know but I just like the look. Anyway, to sum it up.........I am a rock addict! If there ever is a R.A. (Rocks Anonymous), I will have to attend! LOL I look forward to learning so much from you guys. So far, you all have been GREAT!

Pretty cool, sbreed. Thank you for sharing. It's good to get to know the other members of the RTH clan. Living in Arizona, you've got quite the access to an extremely wide variety of rock, and so identification can be quite a challenge. Where I live, the rock types are pretty straightforward sedimentary types and are pretty easy to identify, although the stratigraphy is some of the craziest in the world! What we lack in exotic rocks we make up for in outrageous geological stratigraphy.
Hopefully you will get good at identifying your home state rocks and can share pictures with us, and remember... there's no such thing as "just a rock"!

It's great that you are able to take some classes to help learn to identify the rocks and to have moved to AZ where the rocks are just totally awesome!! Hope it doesn't take too long to adjust to the extra warmth, you're going to have so much fun this winter.

You're in Mesa, aren't you? So are Mr and Mrs Banjocreek, RTH members, who could direct you some good collecting places, I bet. Here's a link to their website www.banjo-creek.com. S
