Hello everyone, I have been lurking here for a few weeks after coming home from a vacation to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We (my 13 year old son and I) brought back a few coffee cans of stones from Lake Superior.
I saw a post about a tumbler for sale and I purchased it. The seller (Snowdog) was fantastic to deal with and I was more than pleased with the transaction. He sent me a sample of his work and I was totally blown away! Beautiful stuff.
So now I have my tumbler running with some rough that Snowdog was kind enough to give me. That is in 80 grit. I filled a drum with the rounded, smooth stones from Lake Superior and used 220 grit in that drum. The third drum is to be used for polish only.
I think I am off to a good start. I have some flint from Central Ohio (Flint Ridge and Coshocton) and I want to start that next week. Do I treat the flint just like any other stone or is it too brittle?
I am sure I will have many more questions to ask, but so far I have had a great experience here and have learned quite a bit already.
BTW, I am also a geocacher and will be looking for stones as well as caches from now on.
Mark

Hi Mark, welcome to the board. You should not have any problems with the flint. Daniel

Welcome aboard. You've joined a board with some of the finest, most knowledgable people in the world. Not just about rocks but there are many folks here with expertise in other fields as well.
But rocks are king here and if you have any questions and ask them, your answer will be forthcoming and it will usually be the correct answer.
Again welcome aboard.
Keep um' rollin

Hey Mark, Welcome to the board. Nice to know there is someone else here from the same area (NW Ohio). Sounds like you are off to a good start. Don't be afraid to ask questions. As you have already seen, the people here are very helpful and willing to go out of their way to get you going. Have done some of the Ohio flint myself and it does pretty good under normal tumbling. Good luck! Dave

Thanks for all of the kind words. I have certainly learned a lot already. Snowdog has treated me great and I am very happy with the tumbler I bought from him. It has been running non stop for 2 weeks and I should have some results in a few more.
BTW, the 80 grit barrel was very bubbly after the first week and the stones were not well rounded, so I changed the grit and am letting it run another week. The 220 grit barrel looked to have a real smooth slurry, so I moved those stones to the next step.
I will get in touch with LCARS soon. I have a few geocoins I'd like to send him to release in his home area.
I will try to take photos of my first attempts at tumbling and post them here. I have a resizing program if someone can tell me what size photos work best on this site.
Thanks again everyone, Mark

Hey Mark, a warm welcome from Minnesota! Good to know you're doing this with your son, nothing better than introducing kids to nature.

I guess I should frequent the Visitor/Member forum a bit more often huh... Hi Moops! Just wanted to give you an official welcome to RTH and thank you for sending the cool Portugal geocoin and the "Roo Pouch" TB. I've never seen a Petoskey stone before and I fell in love with it so I decided to take it and I will replace it with an assortment of local semi-precious stones from Vancouver Island that i've polished in my tumblers to fascinate future would-be rockhound geocachers who find it. Oh BTW, Gaetzchamp is a cacher too, he's from SLC Utah. I'll be sending you a return package sometime in the near future... Cheers! Rob
