Bought one of those cheap tumblers from a hobby shop a while back. Got so-so results, think I got to impatient.
Have my eyes on a 33B. Man, those things sure hold there value on ebay.
Guess I'll have to go new. Any suggestions?
Not a lot of material to be found here in West Virgina. I've got about 8 pounds of chert. Only other material I have is a bunch of appalachian petrified wood. Can't find any information on this stuff.
Anyhoo.....looks like a nice bunch of folks here and I hope to join you all soon with a "real" tumbler.

Hey Trilobite Let me be the first to officially welcome you. I use a 33b. They are reliable, fairly quiet and I like being able to have the 2 barrles running at once. Now that I have the rock-bug I am finding myself wanting something bigger, but that's just me being impatient. The 33b is a good place to start. Ask heaps of questions, read old posts and be prepared to learn...heaps. The people here have mountains of experience.
Good to have you on board. Keep rockin' Mike

Welcome!
You can generally find used Thumler's on ebay cheaper than the Lortones. That's where I've acquired all four of my other tumblers after my first cheap one. My favorite is the oldest one in the bunch - the Model T-2. Love it!
Isn't Unakite also found in W. VA? Hmmm....I'll have to check my notes.

I see Unakite listed as the state stone of Virginia. I've never come across any in WV. There is just a tremendous amount of sandstone and limestone here. No good polishing stuff but there are at least plenty of caves. My first attempt at tumbling the petrified wood in the cheap tumbler was promising. Reminded me of Tigers Eye. I have quite a bit, just don't like cutting it up, but alas....why buy a tumbler?

Welcome to the forum, I love my 33B's, awesome little units. I got mine, barebone, (no extra's like grits/rocks) from www.jatayu.com/ for $88 but they are out of stock right now. You could still check on them if it's in the price range. If you want to look, just click on Tools then scroll down to polishing and finishing.

Welcome! I'm new also. I have a Lortone also. However, I use it for tumbling jewelry. I've heard good things about the tumblers from Harbor Freight. Keep in mind they were also tumbling jewelry...so I'm not sure about rocks.

Hey Trilobite!
I am brand new to this board, saw your message and wanted to say hello. I'm from around Beckley myself. Live in NC now. Rockingham County. I have a bunch of quartz here, if you are ever in the neighborhood... I live on a hill, lots of loose stuff around tree trunks in the woods. more if you dig... hope to talk to ya... Have a good one!

I just finished doing an entire 4 wheel break job on my Isuzu Trooper. New calipers and all at the tune of $450 in parts (bloody thumb on jack stand was free) so I'm Short O' Cash and my eight year old keeps harassing me for a tumbler.
Well, I know most of you are gonna shake you heads but I bought a CE duel for $35....
Maybe I'm a masochist, but I kinda like tinkering with broken things and trying to make them better. I have stated out by replacing the belt ($1.50) with one from a sewing machine shop. Removed the motor housing cover and "installed" a muffin fan that I had on hand to keep the motor cool. Will let you know if it works and for how long.
Anyway, if it fails, I'll have two extra barrels for a 33B at $17 each. I think the Rock Shed sells Lortone Barrels for $20 +S&H

Welcome aboard from another recent newbie. I lived in Maryland for a very long time and I can't help myself with this question. (Are the rocks in good ole W.Va slanted to one side?)
