Hello Everyone,
Brand new to the hobby of tumbling. This looks like 'THE' site to come to. I bought a cheap $30 tumbler from a hobby store and wore it out within about 6 weeks... broke down and bought a Lortone 33b. Been quite pleased with it. Seems a popular model here.
Most of the rock I have here (here=Rockingham co., NC - North of Greensboro NC, South of Martinsville VA) is different varieties of quartz. Beautiful stuff and a hillside full of it... Just gets old looking at the same thing. Wondering if anyone is familiar with the area and knows of public places to hunt different varieties of stones. Quartz seems to be pretty hard and a bit tougher to polish... Is that the general feeling of the experts?
Thanks and looking forward to conversing.
PS. Was originally a WV fella, came south on the "hillbilly highway" aka I-77, about 20 years ago... Love it here, loved it there too.

Welcome to the board, Gather. Probably 90% of what we tumble, slab, cab or otherwise play with is quartz based, whether it's agate or jasper or petrified wood. It is hard, mostly around 7 on the mohs hardness scale, but that's also why most of it polishes up like glass. So it does take longer to shape and tumble, but we're a patient bunch.

I just put some Appalachian Petrified Wood, Tennessee Chert, and Lithostrotionella in my tumbler last night.
If the wood turns out nice, maybe we can swap some rough....you hillbilly deserter.... ;D

Howdy Cous!
Do you find many fossils where you are? My Grandmother lived in Pocahontas county and used to find tons of great fossils there. Every other rock you would pick up had a fossil on it...
Like I said, tons of quartz... Would be glad to...
Thanks!

Aahhhh....Pocahontas.....my favorite place in WV.
I have found shell depressions in sandstone along Deer Creek in Pocahontas when I was younger. Found some Lithostrotionella near Hillsboro, also in Pocahontas, last month.
Have only found petrified wood in Kanawha County.
Let me see how the pet turns out next month. I'm not sure if there are any soft spots or not. The chert I found in Tennessee is looking good though.

Going up there sometime this summer, I hope, going to stay either near Greenbank or over in Elkins... not sure which... Still have some family up there...
See ya!
