Good day all!! Several weeks ago, I took my two sons (ages 7 & 9) by a festival booth that allowed children to "mine" for semi-precious rocks and minerals. They absolutely loved it, and made me take them back several times. Now I figured that rock tumbling might be a better hobby for them than collecting Pokemon cards, so I went out and bought a Chicago Electric 3 lb. tumbler. They have enjoyed the first several cycles, but I am hooked! I look forward to learning from the long time hobbyists and experts!!
Thanks in advance!!

Welcome, Jeff. This is a great place to be for us "newbies!" I have a 3-lb tumbler, too, and I already wish I had 2 or 3 more!
You're going to love it here.

Hey Jeff, Welcome aboard. Yep, now ya did it! Went and got involved in rocks, now its in your blood. Just wait till that first batch is done! Like all of us, you will never get it out of your system. Honestly though, for the boys as well as yourself, this hobby has many many rewards that go with it. Lookin forward to seeing some of your finished products. What a life "rockin" is! Bob

Thanks for the welcome!! I find myself checking the website daily (actually several times of a day), so I know I am hooked.
I have discovered one of the first lessons of the hobby...the belt shipped on Chicago tumblers breaks after 2 weeks of work. Buying the obligatory replacement belts on EBay, I am reduced to a lurker on the website!! Hopefully, I can get back to tumbling soon.

Welcome to the board, Jeff. Yep those CE belts do not have a good reputation. I believe Lortone 3lb belts will fit them. I still have a Lortone belt that has been running 24/7 for 8 months. I hope you and your boys have a great time tumbling.

Exactly! I suppose I could look at it two ways:
1) You get what you pay for!! 2) I should have known when there were more listings for Belts on Ebay than rough and tumblers combined!!
Thanks!

Welcome to RTH, Jeff. This is a wonderful Forum and you have tumbled into a wonderful hobby to share with your children.
Sounds like you are well on your way to full fledged addiction. As soon as possible you'll want to get a Work Force 7" Tile saw at Home Depot so you can show your kids the beauty of what is inside the rocks. When you do get your saw, be sure to sig in on the WF Saw Census up in the General Rocks Board.
Then you'll be needing a cabber, and some wires, and maybe a flat lap, and a nice big 15 # tumbler...yep, this is a wonderful Hobby!
Welcome!
