Hello all,
I am brand new to the hobby and need some tips about tumbling. Specifically I need to find out how you smooth part of a piece while leaving part rough. I have a couple of larger pieces of rough Chyrsophrase that I want to leave the rock that it was embedded in rough and smooth down and polish the rough Chrysophrase. How does one accomplish such a task?
thank you for any and all help!!!

Welcome to the board. Tumbling won't accomplish what you want to do. You can polish a selective part of a rock by lapping (a flat surface) or grinding. Both of these methods can be done by a variety of tools, and start with a coarse step and progress through finer stages, just like in a tumbler.
How big is "larger"?
