Just wanted to thank all you members from whom I have gleaned much information by reading your posts, I have finally taken time to join. I am a native Montanan who has spent several decades enjoying the mountains, having been brought up in the tradition of hunting, fishing, hiking, trail riding and camping among grizzly bears. (really) I have had a lifelong love of agates, in particular the Montana Moss Agate. Only this past summer have I finally seriously hunted agate on the Yellowstone river, adding substantially to the agates and petrified wood I have collected since childhood. I then decided it was time to finally indulge myself and get a tumbler. I am still working on my first load(s), I started with a Lortone QT 12 and soon found that I desired something a bit more powerful so as to be able to fill the barrel to 3/4 without going over weight. So, I built my own simple tumbler that is turning 2, 12 lb. barrels that actually weigh 18 lbs. each! I will submit photos if anyone would be interested. Again, thanks to all who post such great tips, you saved me some time and frustration! Now I am thinking I will need to figure how to build a slab saw on the cheap. Here's to a nice long winter for working and tumbling rocks!

Welcome aboard. I met a guy at a show some time ago that was staring at the Montana agate I was selling. He couldn't believe the prices. He told me he worked in Montana in the 50's and would canoe down the Yellowstone on his days off. He would easily fill his canoe with agate and stop at several rock shops on his way home to sell his finds. He didn't say how much he made back then. He wasn't a rockhound just making extra money on his days off.

Welcome Grayfingers: I am a native Wyoming.........ite !! I now live way down here near Atlanta GA. I have not been back to Wyoming or Montana since June of 94. On the 14th of June on our way back home to Georgia, my birthday, it snowed 6 to 8 inches on the south pass out of Yellowstone Park. It was a real treat. We were staying over at West Yellowstone KOA and I was fixin' "grits" for breakfast when it started snowing. I really enjoyed that trip because of the snow. We don't get much snow here in the west Georgia area. I think we had an inch a few years back. My folks are from Alabama but settled down in middle Georgia at LaGrange. I am having the "urge" to return and this time I want to do alot of rock collecting. I just got a new engine for my truck and I am working out a few bugs. I have a 1000 lb lift gate on the truck, and that is so when I find that 1000 lb gold nugget, I will have something to haul it on !!!!!!!!! Take Care and again welcome to the RTH !!

Hi Montana, I just found this site today, and I went through it kinda fast, but I really like what I saw! I have to learn to navigate through this site a lot better, and I am sure I can learn a ton, and then some! I live in Glassboro NJ and I am polishing rocks / stones about 8 months now, with a 6#, & a 12# Lortone. Good luck! ... lewkal
