Take along a lab wash-bottle when you go rock-hunting. With these a little squirt goes a long way to do a quick wash on stones you pick up. Cut the tip with a small hole so when you squeeze them the water comes out rather forcefully easily washing sand and mud off.

Hehe...I carry a little water bottle that I use for rinsing and drinking on longer seaches. They fit in a pouch that I strap to my waist.
I was on one longish trek and put my cell phone in the pouch with the water bottle.
I think you can guess where this is going. The pouch is rubber lined and the water bottle apparently leaked inside the pouch. I learned that cell phones and water actually do mix, but the final product isn't pretty. ;D

I have a little spray bottle I carry. When not in use for hunting rocks, I can use it to spray water to slick my hair down on those bad hair days! I took it to the rock shop one time when BE and I went. Got home and couldn't find that sucker anywhere. After a couple of weeks looking for it, I finally gave up. Three months later, BE and I went to the rock shop again and guess what I found! My little spray bottle! I was just amazed it was still there! Not amazed that I had forgotten it, though! llana

the ol' rock lick always does in a pinch, but if you don't mind getting a little wet (you shower each day rite?... ) ... I go hound the beach when it's a light rain. dressed accordingly, it's not that bad. The many more finds takes your mind off the wet . I know I have picked up many a nice stone that I would have missed if not for the mist/rain. It's like having all the rocks on the beach licked for ya!!..hehe and the wieght saved in less tools means you can carry more rock..hehe

Hey, licking your rocks is not such a bad idea! You can tell a lot about your rock by licking it. And then you have an excuse to go home and have a cold one to flush out the taste!
Ron
ps I carry a spritz bottle for the times when the mud gets too thick!

You can always spit. Unless you are in the desert and you don't have any. Shit happens.

poking the straightened end of a heated paperclip through the top of a plastic soda bottle makes for an inexpensive ,high pressure , rock and head sprayer, you usually have muddy or dirty hands and this way you dont have to get the lid filthy taking it off.

almost forgot, the night before you go out, fill your 1 qt. soda bottle 1/3 to 1/2 full of warm water and place in freezer. the next day before going out, fill remainder of container with water. if you carry your water in a rubberized or plastic coated pack or pouch, you will be aware of any leaks immediately.

Rainy days are really the best times to collect opaque stones. Particularly if you are checking out gravel parking lots and roads. But nothing shows up agate and quartz like sunshine. I like stormy days at the beach when the surf is really rolling. Water's edge is a trove as the waves stir the rocks. I almost always get my feet wet, but who cares. They dry off. Spacegold

Tou take the lid off the bottle and heat a paper clip with a lighter or propane torch. Run the hot paper clip through the center of the lid from the inside out. You can also wrap a piece of coat hanger or other heavy wire under the ridge around the neck , making a belt hook to hang it with.
If yer the materialistic type or have small hands, you might have trouble holdin on to a one liter bottle when it gets sweaty in the summer sun, or maybe ya dont care to use home spun lookin equipment, Dollar General has fairly good size lever action squirt bottles in household items area for a buck. They got long enough levers that you can hook em in your pants pocket. When hunting lakers in sand plants around Iowa I don't usually bend over and gently pick em up, especiall big ones. The wife says it resembles a pounce. Fox/ Mouse thing. Using just the right combination of deep knee bend / drop movement will activate the lever when it is lodged in your front side pocket. You can tell when I've had a good day in a local sand plant when I return to the vehicle looking like a person with a SERIOUS bladder control problem.

Another thing I usually take along with my water bottle is a bunch of baggies wrapped with a rubber band that I've used before with rocks. And of course you must have your Sharpie along too!
