Hi everyone. Ever set that precious stone in a prong setting and the burr tears up the prong? Get a pair of small needle nose pliers. Box joint pliers are best, but side joint will do for light duty. Cut off the tips of the pliers, leaving 8-10mm to the joint. Get a paralell burr for your foredom #30 handpiece. On one jaw, burr a groove 1/2 the thickness and length of the prong. On the other, file away leaving a triangular point where the prong needs to be notched. The filed portion will extend to the joint from what is now the tip, leaving original material where the notch is meant to be. Narrow the jaws to fit into the setting so only one prong is effected. The groove burred into the other jaw will also act as a stop to index the notch point. Squeeze on prong. Voila! instant notch. Repeat for all the notches and set prongs in usual manner. Every time I notch the prongs I end up with chewed prongs that need inside polishing. This brainchild of mine is clean, neat and quick. You will need to make several pliers for different length and thickness prongs. Have fun.
