Hi Connrock,
Thanks for that link. One newbie questions: how do I use this table when tumbling (what does it mean? Anything over a 5 can be tumbled no problem & will take a nice polish?) Sorry for my ignorance it's hereditary.

Its a scale of hardness - so if you put something of 7 (quartz) hardness in with something of 4 or 5 (malachite). The malachite would likely get scratched, by the quartz and come out dullish.
Rocks of less than 5 can be tumbled, but with other rocks of similar hardness.

Does it impact whether or not the stone will take a polish or not? I have some stones that were in the rough for only a short time - they were already smooth after that - they're in polish now, but I'm not sure they'll shine up real nice because of that.
Is there a number difference that can be put together? like one number difference (4 & 5) will go together but not two (4 & 6)?

Hey Tweetiepy, the time recomendations given are generally for rocks of 6.5 -7.5 hardness. As you drop down in hardness, the time the rocks are left in each sequence will be shorter. In fact, while 6.5 - 7.5 would run for 7 days, I would only run for 4 days with a load of 5.5 - 6.5 rocks. You don't need any more time or work done than is necessary to make the rocks shape like you want. From there, it's just a polish cycle. Softer rocks very suscepible to damage to be sure and use something to cushion them.

Like I mentioned, I had some rocks that were done in rough after 4 days and I put them in polish a few days ago. I added cut-up pieces of elastics - hopefully that will help them out. I'm anxious to have a look at what I got. (I hafta peek ever 2 days or so - specially in the polish stage - I've been pretty good for the other stages).
Now if I can only get my shipment of mexican lace......
