I've read by adding sugar in the pre-polish and polish stages really helps the shine by helping the polish. Have any of you ever tried this? Still waiting for my Lortone tumbler here....nothing much to do but look at my clean rocks and read more...LOL!

there was an old post about sugar, but it's probably long gone now. i've heard horror stories about it tho. right up there with corn meal. get pellets, lots and lots of pellets. you want a nice thick slurry with your polish cycle and lots of pesky pellets.

Actually I've used sugar and had no problems with it. See the point of adding it to the slurry is to make the slurry thick enough that the stones don't "fall" but are cusioned as the rub against each other and the barrel wall. Some people recomend the use of Kayro syrup. Others use pellets since pellets "hold" onto polish and rub against the stone. The only time surgar and Kayro syrup becomes a problem is when the barrel leaks. And really it shouldn't leak. Other people say they've had their barrels "explode" and the sticky mess gets everywhere. But, the only reason for any barrel to "explode" is due to a build up of gas from either pet wood or bone, and that should only happen in the first stage with the coarse grit 60/90. Once you are in the polishing stages then you are no longer removing any mass from your stones only "buffing" them to a nice high gloss. Nowadays I use pellets but only because they are great for adding bulk to your loads so you don't have to wait for more "like" stone to polish. Just add the pellets till you have the right amount for your tumbler.
