What kind of results have you guys had using sand in a tumbler? Are there any natural or item around the house that you can use for grit and polish?

Sand tends to get rounded up after tumbling a while as opposed to grit which retains it's sharp cutting edges - Sand would do the job to a certain extent, but the best results are with grit really - nothing to lose using sand except some time & a lot of patience

Nothing I've come across- Most od the stuff I tumble has a hardness of Mohs hardness of 6 to 8- Pretty hard stuff- Even gravel and such won't touch this stuff- Although I do use 40 Mule Team Borax to burnish!

i used pounded up worthless quartz (like from icky layers & stuff you find in the street). used pieces 1/8 to 1/16th inch & smaller to approximate "natural" tumbling, refreshed it once a week or 10 days. slower than grit, took maybe 2 1/2 months or so to get most of em really smooth. i just tossed em into finely worn out grit for prepolish, they look good. anyway i figured stone age type ppl didn't have silicon carbide, so quartz probably hardest thing commonly found (mohs 7) if they didn't have diamond dust.
