got a 12 pound rotary for Christmas, does anyone know about what size the largest pieces of rough I should use would be? Also, I know I'll need to calculate my recipes differently with the larger barrel, but is there anything else I should know? I'm thinking it might be a little rougher on the rocks just because they are falling further so maybe need to watch the fragile stuff? Any thoughts? Thanks for any input

i did alot of rough in model b's and id say i had some 3x3 or better stones go through haha and sometimes as much as 19lb rollin around in each -- the worst that could happen is wear out the motor,, but i had few probs alittle extra oil on the bars and they hummed along just fine

Yea 3 or so inches- You want the rocks to cascade (almost like a rolling action) in the tumbler- Too big and they just clunk along at the bottom of the barrel- I'm gonna get a 12 Lber soon and use it only for course run- just feed it grit and rocks every week and it will be happy!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, bulk up on the coarse runs

I have the Lortone 312 and I have put all sizes in there. I have ran some that were 3" with small agates the size if a quarter. I have always filled it up 2/3 of the way up and have good results. I always get a couple that chip or break, even in the #6 barrels. right now I am running some huge rocks, about 6 that are fist size, of ocean jasper and some whole brazilian agates, I also threw in a bunch of small rocks and they are doing just fine.

Wow, this thing takes AlOT of rough. I worked for a LONG time today prepping material for the 12 pounder, figured I had just about enough, weighed it and it was just over 6 pounds!!!! Sheesh!!!
