Hello Everyone.
I am interested in tumbling cabs. I intend on shaping the cabs through a 280 grit diamond wheel pollisher and then tumble finish in 20 cab batches (cab sizes 10mm x 30 mm).
I have not purchased any tumblers yet. Which would you go with, vibratory tumbler or a regular barrel tumber? I want to hold the cab's general shape.
What media do your recommend to keep the cabs from scratching. (Angled cut ceramic, plastic, etc.) What mix ratio of media to cabs do you recommend?)
Any recommendations for time sequence and grits for tumbling cabs.
I have time to tumble if a regular tumbler works. A regular tumber is quieter, less expensive and I can run multiple barrel batches. Will a regular barrel tumber hold a cab's shape or would a vibratory tumblber be better.
Thanks everyone for any assistance.

Hmmm this was posted somewhere else- I think the consensus was go with a vibe from 500 grit on up?

I am in polishing phase with preforms and cabs also. I know that is recommended to use vibe instead of rotary tumbler, but I am doing just that. I preshaped them only on rough grinding wheel and started tumbling from phase 2. It looks to me that they are doing just fine. I think that only problem could be if you are planning to set cabochons in prefabricated findings. But I think that this is not a problem if you leave them just a bit bigger in rough grind. We will se soon. I plan to post results in member photograph section after burnishing phase. Zotika
