Penny
Welcome aboard.
A good many people swear by the rock shed. Good prices, great shipping, excellant people to deal with. Just do a search for The Rock Shed.
After experminting a bit I believe you'll be using grit made for the purpose of tumbling rocks. Garbage in - garbage out.
Im still fairly new but I think a lot of knowledge folks will jump in and help you. They sure helped me.
Any questions you have they'll have answers you can rely on.

Hi Penny, Have you ever dealt with eBay? Most sellers use Paypal and you can set it up to have Paypal take the money from your checking account, (maybe even a savings account,) like a debit card. You can also use money orders for a lot of things on Ebay and sellers, such as ronsrocks will supply anything you need, even if it isn't listed as an Ebay auction. Welcome to the hobby! Wendy

Wendy has good suggestions. An alternative is an old fashioned MAIL order. Fill out an order form and mail it in with a check or money order. Some on-line vendors have an order form you can download and mail in. Most of not all have a mail order addresses. Be aware that if you use a personal check, the vendor may not ship the order until he sees that the check has cleared. Good luck! PS: Web address for the Rock Shed is www.therockshed.com Another that I have used is Alpha Supply at www.alpha-supply.com. They even have a printed catalog that you can request. You can call either one to see how the prefer an order with a check or money order be handled.

penny you should probably get a credit card and a paypal account if you are really going to get into the rocks. they will both come in handy.

Hi Penny, You live in a small town so to get you going ------ try and break up a old course grinding wheel thats discarded , into small grains and use that ,WEAR EYE PROTECTION.
This is not a perfect solution but would get the stones started & get the corners ground off
In any small town there should be something made of carbrundum grit used to sharpen knives, steel preparation use in welding and steel fabrication , Farm repair shop , Garage just have a look !!
