:)I have a question about the grit. For the first step, instead of using the the course grit that came with my tumbler, could I use silica sand ? Ameasha

You could, but it will break down really fast and make to thick of a slurry, before it really does anything to the rock. I have used it to tumble glass and after a week it turned the glass into real good looking beach glass, I had to keep throwing more sand and water in everyother day though.

Is there any substitute at all ? I don't know of anywhere I could get my grits from. I live to far away from the big cities like Toronto Ontario, Hamilton Ontario Canada, ect. Now there are refill kits that I could buy, but it is $20.00 a kit and I only get 1 course, 1 mediumn and 1 polish, so it would cost me $20.00 each time I did a batch which would become costly. Is there anyone in the group from around Ontario that knows where I could buy bulk or is there a substitute ? Ameasha

If you post your question up on the General forum Ameasha, it will get answered faster. We have lots of Canadian members who'll be able to help you out with where to order grit in Canada.

www.therockshed.com/grit.htmlThe Rock Shed is the cheapest place I've found online for grit. They sell four-step packs for $13.50 + around $6.00 s/h. The pack includes 1 lb of Coarse (60-90 Grit), 1 lb of Medium (120-220 Grit) 1 lb of Fine Grit (500 and Finer) and 1 lb of their Polish. I'm not sure but, I think it's Cerium oxide. It also comes with instructions for rotary tumblers and a tumbling tips sheet. There is enough grit in the package for: 4 Batches in a 3 lb tumbler. 2 Batches in a 6 lb tumbler. 1 Batch in a 12 lb to 15 lb tumbler. If your tumbler is bigger than this...I can't help. Batch = All four steps Hope this helps.
