I am doing local jasper, quartz, and anything else that looks nice. Even throw in a few pieces of agate now and then. Most of that is starting to take a shine after a week in the prepolish barrel. But there are always a few that come out looking dull. These I have found to be softer stones that are being beat up by the harder ones.
So I set them aside in a 2# tumbler barrel until I have a load with pellets and a tablespoon of jeweler's rouge. I put it on the small tumbler for a couple of weeks to get a nice polish on obsidian, malachite, and a pretty pea green local stone, among others.
