I am forced to turn to a book for cabbing training. You guys have been great with my crazy questions, but you need a break from them. There are no classes of any kind in my area for at least the next year. I am learning more with each mm taken off, for instance my domes are much better, a family of four could have lived under the first ones. In your opinon what are best two that could guide me through cabs, and mountings.
Thanks for any help Spike

Most guides cover equipment , not the art of shaping the stone, BUT of the several books and phamplets I have bought over the years, the only one I kept was: Introduction to Lapidary by Pansy D. Kraus I have seen that shop tips book. There were a few things in there I wanted to build. I bid $4 at our club's silent auction last Aug and some old guy in a wheelchair came up and bid $5. Since I was running the auction, I just didn't think I could bid against him.

Spike, there were a couple of online how-tos posted in the cab section a while back. They were really, really good from my standpoint (having never ground rocks). You might dig through the few non-picture posts in that section.

With age comes great knowledge! you don't need a book if you have 105 yo walking, talking rocking, rolling old stock to show you the ropes! I have found out things that make my head spin from some of the fork's at the club I am in. Best of luck with the speech Oh ya the book I was talking about was the first thing they told me to find and I love it. By the way I am the youngest member of our club as far as I know and at my last B'Day my kids gave me a roll of duct tape because they said I was falling apart Steph

The top two rules around here are don't laugh out loud and don't talk back to the TV (the last one has been tough) otherwise Grandma says "What, WHAT?" and then I spend 30 mins. trying to explain. But the last one I laughed out loud at, damn the consiquences. I hope to learn a lot from them as I have here. There is going to be a demonstation on cabbing sometime in the next couple of weeks and I am hoping that even though I have not been officaily accepted yet, I can attend.
I am going to steal the duct tape thing btw.

I got books, and books. They all contribute in one way or another. However, nothing beats just doing it. We do not learn from our successes, our mistakes make the path clear. That is the best way. Get a stone, dop it. Turn on the grinder, make a mess, and figuire out what might work better. In school, you learn it their way, on their tools. In your shop, you figuire a way, on your tools, and make it better. Hey, books are great and I refer to them constantly. I have found, once I am cabbing, the books make more sense.

Doc, I have written this like four times today and the deleted it each time. Well here goes: Why don't you set up a "how to" dvd? Pick out a few members with their own specialty and do a here's how I do it film? Who knows maybe it could work into something like money someday.

There will come a time, when I set up and have a school. The first thing hanging me back is I do not yet meet my own standards. That might sound off colour, but I still come across an issue or several I know nothing about that doesn't meet "classic" criterion. I do take students on occasion now, but so far, all have dropped out. One came close, but, she got that glazed look and evaporated. Teaching is a two part proposition. The student must equal the effort the teacher presents, the teacher must present a format challenging yet retaining the learning curve. One day, I will but for now, I am working on the daily jewelery challenges and trying to simplify so standard repair experience will be the catylist. One day...... it is something I think about constantly. I even had a student rip the shop off for a considerable amount.
