I realized that I already have a Sears 1/2 hp 2 wheel grinder...
What else do I need? What type of wheel(s) do I need if I was just looking shape stones for tumbling?
Any suggestions/procedures that I should be aware?

You need some 100G and 220G SiC wheels. You can use the wheels that are on it, but they will chip the stone more. If they still got some life in them, I say use them. One of them may be a fine grade, 60 or 100G so it will work OK. When you are dry grinding, there will be lots of dust, DON'T BREATH IT. Use a mask or a shop vac or a little water but be carfeful not to shock yourself. Also, with the 3k grinder RPM watch your fingers, some use tape on the tips. I have ground my finger a couple times, be careful. It lots of fun so enjoy! Bill

What is SiC? Is that a brand name or type of wheel?
Would I just wet the stone and/or the wheel itself?

sic is silicon carbide wheel if the wheels are black there for metal wont do you much good with stone,, look for green lapidary wheels there for shaping stone and yes you can dip your stone wile workin it cause it will get very hot without a water drip on the grinder

Hey Blizz! It has taken me since June to get enough equipment so that i can do something with rocks, the other members have given you good advise. The first piece on equipment i got was a grinder and it came with a 65 and 80 grit wheels, and it was VERY dusty when i tried to use them,i bought a face mask then i couldn`t use it because it fogged up my glasses ,so i hooked up a shop to the back of the grinder,Biker Randy gave me some good advice on hooking it up. I too had a few skinned fingers it`s called a learning experience, but the best thing i did on my grinder was getting a 100 grit green grinding stone, there for rocks, but like some of the other members the best tool you can get is patience.Hope this helps..........Rocky

You guys rock! (pun obviously intended) I was going to start a whole new thread and ask about grinders, wheels etc. and thought..."hmmm, maybe I'll see if it has already been answered" and BINGO here it all is! Thanks for answering all the questions that you do and putting up with us newbies who often have no clue what we're talking about.
