Sands,
It's a superb package, i've got it installed, and I install it on the PCs of "friends and family" aswell when they ask me what antivirus software they should buy. I just say "why buy when this is available at the moment."
I use Norton aswell, but have had problems updating when the year runs out due to bugs. So I wont be updating anymore - just sticking with AVG.
It also integrates with Outlook perfectly.
Yup - good package in my experience with it.

Sands, I can't see how they can produce such a high quality product for nothing either.
I've had it for over 9 months under XP Home and it runs like a dream. In particular I'm totally impressed with its integration with Outlook - scanning both inbound and outbound emails and marking them as scanned.
It was originally recommended to me by a friend who has a computer business of his own, Ive known the guy (Neal) for about 18 years so I didnt question him - I just installed it.
It doesnt interfere with anthing youve got running on your PC already, no conflicts nothing.
Good product, and I dont even mention norton or mac anymore to anyone with a home based PC. (Mcafee I always associate with server side protection anyway as it stands).
Yup - everyone should get AVG for sure.

I used AGV on my other computer and had no problems with it ever. It is a good program. I use Norton now because I wanted the security system Norton offers. Hate paying $45/yr for it, but it's worth it to be able to run in the "stealth" mode and be invisible to any hacker that is probing around with nefarious intentions.

Llanago - Agree - the separated functions of nortons software (in this case Internet Security) arent (so far as Im aware) available on AVG (soz to nitpick but its AVG not AGV just incase anyone does a search engine query).
I'm not totally sure what the "attacks" I get reported on nortons Internet Security are in detail, it comes up with messages like "IP address has attempted to back door trojen me" etc etc.
I guess I'll be wanting to retain that part of Norton.
hmmm - good thread on PC security - what do other people use?
To be honest my biggest problem is spam email still. I get about 4000 spams per month at the moment.

Is it just me, or does this software update an awful lot? Just installed it yesterday and now it's updating for the third time. Udates now total twice the original size of the program file.

Ok how much resources does it eat up while it's running in the back ground? does it contain any spyware? I found a sweet program called, EMCO Malware Bouncer. You can set it to run everyday or when ever you want to start it. It runs very fast, I have 2 hard drives and it will scan both in about 3 min. It doen't run in the back ground and eat up resources either...

I've been using AVG for at least 2 years, maybe longer and I love it. I've used Norton and McAffee and believe AVG beats them hands down ... not just because it's free either. I run ZoneAlarm firewall with it and am totally stealth.
I get the calls from family and friends ... Something's wrong with my computer, can you fix it. Upon checking I generally find their anti-virus programs is no longer updating so I delete it and install AVG.
AVG works just as well with both the Netscape and Thunderbird email programs.
Ron, I have mine set to check for updates everyday but you can set it to however often you want it to check and also the time you want it to check.
earthdog, NO! There is no spyware. Grisoft is a legitimate anti-virus program and if you're worried cause it's free, you can buy it. It's free for personal use only, businesses need to buy it. As far as using up resources, I'd have to say no to that also. I have an old computer, it doesn't slow it down a bit.
If you run Ad-Aware and and Spybot Search & Destroy, yo shouldn't need to worry about spyware and malware. At least as long as you keep it updated and run it weekly.

I got rid of spybot, and just run EMCO and ad-ware. Zone alarm is bad. Have you ever tried to get it off your computer? I did 4 years ago, and it embeds it self deep and keeps comming back, you must do a rebuild of your hard drive or go through a bunch of bs from the company for them to show you how to get rid of it. Then when people want to send you a file through a IM. it will block it, so you can't get it. All programs eat up resources when running, so I doubt it doesn't eat any at all. I was wondering how much, like 1% or 6/8% like some programs do.

I didn't mean that it doesn't use any, sorry I worded that wrong. I just meant it doesn't use a lot as it didn't slow my old puter down. I've never had any problems with ZoneAlarm and have been using that for years now. It's like all programs though, some you like, some you don't.

Ditto to a lot of what Cher said. The guy that built my computer says he runs AVG on everything that comes into his shop and it always finds things missed by Norton and McAffee.
