Arrrggghhhhhhhhhh!!! What a day this has been! I have another obsession besides rocks, rock hunting, tumbling and making jewelry from rocks which is growing African violets. Along with a good friend of mine from Texas, we have a very popular website and forum. We were actually the very first on-line African Violet Club recognized by the African Violet Society of America (AVSA), a fact that we are very proud of and something that has encouraged us to really keep a clean house. Needless to say, a lot of time is spent by my friend and I taking care of the forum, photo gallery, website, monitoring the forum, helping members, answering emails, running contests, etc. It's something that we enjoy doing and like here, I have made many friends there. Today our forum was hacked. What a mess ... I'm so freakin' p!$$ed I could puke. I'd like to get the little ****head who did this and bust his chops but good. I'd like to reach down his/her throat and rip their bloody heart out ... OR Maybe rip off their arm and beat them on the head with the bloody stump. But both of those would be to good for the turd who did this. I just fail to understand why people are so hell bent on ruining what others work so hard to create and maintain. Ok sorry just really needed a place to vent. A place where I can come back and read it and think of other ways I'd like to torture the *******. Cher

so sorry to hear that, Cher, i must admit i'm not sure what happened to your other site? maybe Mark/Andy can give you some pointers to protect yourself? and it is such a bad thing that other people have to go in and MESS STUFF UP for other people without cause.. i wish i could help but am not that technologicaly adept. rip out their arms and beat them with the bloody stump sounds fair to me. Far from minimal, they've completely destroyed our databases. Thankfully my partner had backed everything up last night but restoring it is going to take some doing. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff we found when we started digging deeper ... it was awful. They changed most of the database names to F this, F that, F your flowers ... very nasty and totally ruined. The bad thing is my partner has to do the repair work herself. She's got the back ups and it's almost a guarantee of more disaster if you have two different people trying to work on the databases at the same time. I feel pretty useless right now. Cher

I understand hackers...what a pain in the neck! They need to find a real, full time day job, as they obviously have too much free time on their hands. Hacking and destroying a person website is a CRIME and they think they are just too clever to get caught! There are ways to track them with their IP address to start with...go get 'em!

Unfortunately, we could find tracks but I did write to support to ask if they could check on the traffic this afternoon. Being that it was such a short time period between when they did this and when we found it, they should be able to narrow it down.

We have our own domain where all of our stuff was stored which is at a purchased hosting site. So, they hacked into the hosting sites servers to get to our site.
php forums (like this one) work through databases. This forum is hosted by ProBoards ... it would be like if they hacked into the ProBoard servers (the ones that were just updated with the new version last week) and screwed up all the databases that run this forum.
Clear as mud?

That is miserable. My heart goes out. It will take a lot of work to redo, and that was their point. I think they just do it to be miserable. Maybe Andy can help. Mark, I donno. He might be in cahoots. Well probably not, I donno. He has come through before. Maybe you guys will work it through. If it came through the server, what steps are they going to incorporate to prevent defacing? It is truly a brave new world. I liked the old one better. That was when Men were men, sheep ran scared, and 'puters had tubes and todays keyboards have more memory than the entire computer had. I can still read punch tape.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the thoughts and sympathies. It is totally miserable but we're working on it. Fortunately, we still had our old ezboard forum and I was able to remove the offending page and redirect all of our members to the old form. From what I'm gathering, only about 4 or 5 members actually saw the garbage so that makes me feel good that we covered our bases right away. I've contacted tech support and emailed the abuse line but haven't heard back ... just have a "case number".
LOL yeah, we're all just numbers, lined up by the electricals who are probably in cahoots with the hackers. Or to be "politically correct" crackers. (So claim the "hackers" that they are the good guys and the crackers are the evil doers that mess up the interent.)
Cher
PS ... Thanks for letting me vent, I so needed it today. *smile* I'm better now ... don't want to rip their hearts out anymore ... just want to nail their beaners to a tree stump (in a swamp) with a railroad spike, making sure they are nekkid as jaybirds and the mosquitos are in full force.

Cher, you are being too easy. Before you nail their beaners to a tree stump, make sure it is surrounded by fire ants, and big brown ants. Give the mosquitos a run for their money and see which one wins. Actually, take their little beaners, hang them by them, if they were large they wouldn't have to hack in the first place, and slowly lower the culprits down on a fire ant nest. Just make sure the mosquitos have had their fill first. Find a good stump to make sure the brown ants are in there with young to protect. Sit back and enjoy.

Cher I'm so sorry, it must be heartbreaking. I cannot understand the mentality of people who do things like this, why don't they go out and get a life rather than destroying other peoples work Lucky you have the backups to restore from, hope things work out soon. Rose

Cher that totally sucks! My son is a computer geek and he loves the online gaming scene- Well he was hacked into by some guy looking for info (ie credit card ss number bank account info) He had to sit there and watch as this guy snooped all through his computer- He vowed right then and there that if he ever caught any hacker (or cracker- whatever) he would personally cut off there tiny little $*&@! It sounds to me as if you and your friend were pretty well perpared- and that the damage (view wise) was minimal so congrats on that part- BTW My wife and her Grandmother are African Violet freaks- The wife has a dozen or so (i lost count after 4) and here Grandmother has 25 plus! They are very cool plants- Good luck with everything!
