i woke up this morning to a house full of smoke and the smell of something burning. i was groggy and terrified not knowing what was going on or what to do. i was running everywhere trying to determine what was on fire and finally when i ran into the kitchen a towel was on fire sitting on the eye of the stove right in front of a pot of grease that my husband had left out when he cooked french fries last night. there was like a millimeter area not burning and i grabbed that and threw it in the sink and cut the water on. rushed my even groggier child and the dog outside into fresh air. ran back in and cut on the ventahood, every ceiling fan, propped the door open so the cats could get air. it was 7:15 when i completed all this. i called my husband and he said he was wiping the stove off with the towel about 30 minutes prior. apparently knocked the knob on low, left the towel on top and left for work! yep grateful to be alive! why do i not have smoke alarms?? putting smoke alarms on my list of things to get right away. we have heat detectors all over the place - what do they do? my eyes are still burning.

OMG Kim, you are so lucky you woke up when you did! Yes, get some smoke alarms right away and mention them to your insurance company. Most give you a small credit if you have them in your house.
Thank God ALL of you are ok.

Hey Kim. Glad you guys are okay. Could have been a disaster. Smoke alarms are life savers and everyone should have them. Most important is to change the batteries twice a year-when you change the clocks. Rant on Kim, you have a right to.

Hi Kim, It sounds like you found the fire just in time! Most deaths are caused by smoke rather then the actual fire.
Im glad everyone is OK and there wasn't much damage.
We had a similar thing happen here quite a few years ago.I won't go into the details but the fire was in our son's bedroom and by the time we found it it was "almost" too late.We had a lot of smike damage and had to move out of the house for about 8 weeks.
At the time of the fire we had smoke detectors in the hallway and 1 down in the basement.NEITHER of them went off!!If our son was sleeping in his room he would be dead!!
You MUST have detectors in all bedrooms. They don't cost much at all but can save the life of a dear one or even your self.
We now have detectors in all of our rooms and 4 in the basement.
It's a shame tha some of us have to go through the experience of a fire to know we should have a fire detector. But it's even more of a shame if we only have one !
Happy you're OK.

my first "real" job as a young girl was selling fire detection systems (and once sold, installing the suckers too).
the first system they "give" you is to install in your own house (i was still living with my parents) and it's saved them more than once, as they still heat with wood.
i am SO glad to hear that you are all OK and managed to get out and that your pets are OK. extremely lucky for sure. (all that good rock energy, no doubt).
we have heat smoke AND CO2 detectors in our house.
stay safe, Kimmer,
KD

Sheesh, that was a close call! Glad you, child and dog are okay. Yep, smoke alarms - one in every room and down the hall always with a fresh battery!

Holy Smoke! (NO PUN) Kim I'm glad you and the fam are ok!!!! Well if nothing else at least your gonna put in smoke detectors! I used to do fire clean-up (smoke and water damage) and it ain't no fun- The smell takes for ever to get rid of! Did you have a small "disscussion" with the hubby? My wife probably would have banned me from the kitchen!

Not only should you get smoke detectors..but get yourself some ABC fire Extin. too! Damn cheap insurance to have those around. We almost lost our lives and the house about 6 years ago when our gas stove caught fire...so I know how you are feeling right now and it will stay with you for a long time. Just don't allow it to take over... Fear is good sometimes...just be prepared for whatever can happen if possible.
You will be OK...take a deep breath and say,,Thank you Lord..

OMG I'm glad you & your family are okay - I thought all houses come equiped with a smoke alarm? I know mine works, my 5 year old knows how to fan the darn thing when I'm cooking...
