running on battery power here.....
we had a micro burst here, major trees uprooted and huge mess to clean up. gonna take some heavy machinery, i'm afraid. the very lucky thing is that the house sustained no damage, so i'm feeling like a lucky girl.
the pain in the butt tonight is that with no power, there is no shower and tomorrow is the Citizenship Ceremony!!!
of all nights to be without power!
so, if i'm MIA for a few days, don't worry, we'll get things back eventually. i'll try and take some photos of the devastation in our yard. i feel sorry for all the little birds that went frantic when they lost their homes, poor things.

We had a micro burst right over our shop in Ft. Myers. The wind blew and I had to be a shield after the walls went away. People underestimate the amazing power of a microburst! Every other vendor lost their wares, displays, and stuff blew all over. I held on to ours, got soaked, pummeled by freezing cold rain. We only lost our Riz trays, the glue let go. Good luck with the citizenship thing. Just tie the hair back, and have a ball. Good luck.

Just ask your self, What would Harold Roderick do in a time like this? Then sit back, reflect, and tally-ho. You should see what it is like down here when the power goes out. In the past, the Floriduhidians had 14' ceilings, and large windows. Today, what with all the yuppies coming and living in tract houses, aka ranches, when the power goes out, in 15 minutes the heat comes, and then some. Then the humidity...... Video tapes get mildew, stamps stick together, gunpowder goes bad, floors buckle, sheetrock gets black mold. Imagine three weeks, four weeks before the power goes on. Pools turn green in an heartbeat and algae that looks like barf floats around in it. The the mosquito larvae hatch in the pools and enter the houses. Then the cockroaches, fire ants, spiders, snakes, geckos, then the Alligators start foraging in yards, homes, under cars, down the streets. Then Bubba starts argueing with his helpers, and they throw their hats on the ground and walk away from hooking up the wiring. Yee Ha!

kd i'm sitting here pondering exactly what you mean by a "microburst" and sypathizing about the no lights, mess in the yard.......then i got to the "i would have made a lousy pioneer" part and busted out laughing. i'm with you on that! i was traumatized when we had that ice storm in '94 (see 11 yrs ago and i still think about it lol). i like some light now, air, heat, washing machine........tumblers, grinders, saws........what did they do when they had to go to bed at dark? what'd they use for nightlights?

Damn KD those MB will killya! we had one last fall- Took the power company 15 hours to figure out that the power lines were down right were I told em (I flagged down the truck and showed it to them- and they say- nah that can't be it- sure enough it was it!) I sit up all night worrying about the sump pump and the flooded basement- even with the generator (which needs to be gassed up every half hour) I still worry- Kim- A microburst is a high powered Straightline wind usually associated with a Thunder storm- Wind speeds can easily reach 100 + MPH Kinda like a tornadoe but no funnel cloud- just a straight line-

kd are you still in the dark?
thanks stefan for explaining. here they would just say straightline winds because we wouldn't know what was coming if they said microburst lol.

yeh, we got power back on in the wee hours of friday morning, so we were able to shower here before the citizenship ceremony. that went well and we had a great party afterwards at one of our favorite local restaurants. monday we are back down to the city to apply for his American passport.
we weren't the only ones to suffer tree damage as was evident on our trip around the neighborhood later friday. my insurance agent sadly informed us that none of it was covered (lightning, yes, wind, no). so we are faced with an awesome clean up task on our own nickel. but, it's been so hot and humid here that i haven't even gone out to start to pick up the branches i can move by myself.
things could have been a LOT worse here, so we are still feeling pretty lucky one way or another although i cringe everytime i look out the back window.

Ahh but the trees will come back- 15 yrs ago we had a devestating ice storm- lost tons of trees- (actually I think the final count was 147) Our insurance agent informed us that trees wern't covered (big surprise) We spent that spring, summer and fall cleaning up- every weekend, every evening, The next spring was the most incredible thing I have ever seen- The remaing trees were awesome- More flowers than I have ever seen- and APPLES GALORE!!!! It was natures way of rebuilding- Now you can barely tell where branches may have come down- or where trees were missing- Plus my parents had a lot of the trees turned into lumber that sold to pay for the chainsaw we ended up purchasing to aid in the clean up-
