Hi, I took those bead pics you asked for, and since I don't know how to send them in a PM, I'm posting them here. My first attempt at pics had them out of focus...the camera wanted to focus on the ruler and shirt in the background. So I retook them by locking the focus the camera wanted to give me, then backed the camera away slightly while watching in the LCD screen to see when best focus was achieved. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you might have to play around with the focus a bit when you take pics of your gems, but it certainly seems doable. These were all taken hand-held by the way. The camera has an optical stabilization feature, so you can avoid the need for a tripod in many situations.
Here's a 6 mm bead (the closest size I had to your 10 mm upper limit):
This is the bead at close focus in ultrazoom mode, with the pic shrunk down to go through Photobucket and fit the screen here. The numbers on the ruler are in centimetres, with the individual black lines marked being 1 mm divisions.
This is the same pic but using the editing software to crop the pic down to show the bead only:
Here's some smaller "doughnut" beads, 2 mm in size, to match your 2 mm lower size limit. These are near close focus in ultrazoom mode.
This is the same pic, edited to enlarge it, using the software that came with the camera. I missed the focus a bit apparently, as the ruler is in sharp focus, not the beads, but that gives you some idea of depth of field up this close (the lighting was poor today, fairly heavy overcast, so you might do better on a brighter day -- avoid direct sun though, too many reflections).
Hope that gives you the info you were looking for!
Don
