i was rescued today by a stranger. on good days i try to walk a few miles around my "country block" which is about 3.5 miles. and while this is a rural neighborhood we still have rules about "dogs at large". but most people don't heed them much and today i was more or less cornered by a younger dog (and i am extremely terrified of dogs small or large.) luckily some guy noticed my dilemma, stopped and asked if i needed assistance and without thinking about what i was doing, i jumped in his car...two seconds after i closed the door..i was questioning my hasty decision. luckily, he turned out to be a good guy, a new neighbor, in fact and although i thanked him for getting me several hundred feet away from the offending canine, i wish i'd had more prescense of mind to thank him properly. because as i noticed after getting out of his car, i was very close to being a little shocky, and more afraid of the dog than i'd realized. so, chivalry ain't dead, there are people that practice random acts of kindness/generosity/concern. and i guess i have to buy pepper spray if i want to continue to walk around my block.... KD, FYI - you need something other than pepper spray for dogs. There was a case where someone sprayed pepper spray on a dog and the dog died. The owner sued the spayer and won - only in America. Don't remember the $$ amount but I remember I was shocked.

I find the best way to deal with 96% of dogs is to just treat them like they're your dog! Greet them cautiously but respecfully . If the dog doesn't like you then continue to face it as you move away from "his territory".
I guess that's easier said than done when you have an inate fear of dogs but acting scared usually confuses them & they are more likely to react adversely to submissive body language.
Good thing you have nice neighbors though to come to your rescue like that!

kd i got one of these for christmas last year www.seenontv.com/prod-pages/bug_zapper.html because everyone knows i'm a freak about a wasp. it will kill bugs, get your brother-in-law off the couch, it does not kill plumbers but does get them working faster, and i imagine it would deter a dog or mugger. i do keep mine away from my child. might want to keep it away from the plumbers, after i zapped the one downstairs he had to zap the one in the attic and we almost had a zapping war. kim

KD-
Good story. I'll bet you got a nice little baggy of rocks you could drop by his house. He'd probably appreciate that!
I hope the offending dog wasn't the one posted on this board by BikerRandy!!!!LOL,
