My cat has just come in and is absolutely covered in thick greasey old oil - its all matted into her fur.
Anyone know of anything that I can use to dissolve the grease without hurting her - I'm rubbed her down with an old flannel which I wet in water with a drop of mild shampoo - I've got rid of the big clumps of grease but she is still covered in it and its all in her paws and whiskers - I'm just worried about her licking it all and getting ill.
Any suggestions ?

Rose get some Dawn dishwashing detergent. It is the same thing they used on the animals and mammels after the oil spill in Valdez, Alaska.

The poor cat! Owww. If you use Baby shampoo, it is mild. I used to wash my ferrets with it to get rid of the skunk smell. The other alternative is to use fingernail scissors, and cut under the hairballs. It grows back. That poor cat.

Sorry to hear about your cat getting mucked up. I wonder if this is another potential use for borax?

Rose, That's Easy. Throw her in your tumbler, CO would probably work best, take her out in a few days and she should look sparkling, wire-wrap and hang it out to dry. LMK What else I can help you with. Steve
PS...sorry to hear about you messy cat.

Thanks for the suggestions. I couldn't find Dawn detergent over here. So once hubby got home we put her in the bath and used a mild shampoo - We both have the scratches to prove it ! - its not great but the worst is off her, she is still completely grey all over her stomach and paws (she is normally white !). I think I'm going to have to cut a few bits off her when she has settled again. She is sitting in front of the fire now after enjoying a plate of tuna fish to make up for the bath treatment She doesn't seem distressed. I just hope she hasn't made herself ill after licking it all. ;D

I think I'd call a vet and ask just in case. They may be able to ease your mind or let you know exactly what would take it out.

Sorry about your kitty!Perhaps though it has taught her a lesson and she will stay away from oil . We had a cat that liked to sleep under the hoods or bonnet of carsbecause it was warm, He came to a bad end by doing so.

Ooops, sorry I didn't get here sooner, i'd told you to take it to the vet. doing anything to a cat that doesn't want it done can be harmful to your health and I have the scars to prove that.
