i didn't get to share the joys of volleyball coaching since we lost so much that i didn't have much good news except it was fun and they did progress by the end of the season. but now basketball is another story! we are on our 3rd game. 1st game we won by a long stretch, 2nd game the girls wouldn't listen to me as the 1st game had their heads too big so we got officially whipped....... i have almost no voice after last nights game. i have 1 girl who is just awesome, 4 who are right on her heels, and 3 that are tiny as teacups and came into it with no clue whatsoever. y'all watching those little ones progress is so awesome. it was a neck in neck game until after the 1st 1/2 when my little teacups became pitbulls. i have told them that nobody is expecting them to try to take the ball because they are so little and the big girls aren't going to throw them the ball so if they want it they are going to have to take it. they were snatching balls from those bigger opponents so fast that nobody was expecting it. one snatched the ball and took it all the way down and SCORED - she's 6 yrs old - i was blinking back tears and looked to see her dad's face and he was watching the game on the other side . he didn't see that baby score her 1st points!! we have 7 more games and i'll keep y'all posted. this is so exciting! 2 wins - 1 loss! kim

Kim that is so cool, they don't even offer basketball to kids that young up here. Kids don't get the sports stuff until they are in like 4th grade. How'd you get into coaching it?

cher they didn't offer sports this young when i was growing up. softball was my sport with basketball coming in 2nd but being 5'1" i gave up basketball after jr. high when everyone starting growing way taller than me. because i was so involved as a kid, when they needed someone to keep score or run the concession stands they called me, then started calling me to coach when they couldn't get enough softball coaches. this is the 1st year i've coached anything outside of softball and volleyball was the 1st sport where i've coached my own child. my child is one of the littlest ones on the team and the least aggressive of them all. my child has been the worst on the team in every sport we have played so far (she did not get this from me ;D). she has been the most improved player by the end in every one of them. i've noticed parent coaches are very hard on their own child so i'm trying real hard not to do that but it can be very hard!

wooo, wooo, wooo, 34 to 10 and another teacup scored!! even my child made an attempt to score!! one of my little ones latched onto the ball in the opponent's hands and they were shaking her all around like a rag doll but she wouldn't let go. finally they shook her loose and she went sliding on her knees, looked at us all and smiled then went back after the ball. they are soooooooo proud of themselves and i am proud of them too.

Man My girl plays B-Ball and to see the progress from the first game (where she could barly dribble) to the last game (where she had 3 steals was 2 for 3 at the foul line) and scored 6 additional points) Our team was Way out matched last season (we only had 7 girls at any one game) but the girls were real troppers and never gave up (sadly they never did win) But this year- well they are recuiting and hoping to have a strong contention!

are they playing yet stephan? this is so fun!
4-1 with a very close game last night. 2 of my best players are gone for the week of thanksgiving so it was a BIG win for us with those 2 gone. my daughter even fouled a couple of times actually getting the ball. she's still afraid to shoot it and passes it off quick. one of the girls has decided that if they won't pass her the ball she will take it away from her own teammates - yikes!
tonight we play the only team that has beat us so far. it should be interesting and darn good practice for the little ones no matter what happens. wish us luck as we will need it.

rofl - well it was a nightmare! they beat us 34-3. my poor girls were so flustered they broke into 5 separate teams and would not acknowledge they had teammates. at one point when they ran in at the end of a quarter i asked if they had all changed their names because the names i was using didn't seem to be working. they do not like losing and it was really sad. bright side is we don't have to play this team again!!

Awww, too bad they had such a high score, losing is not so bad if the scores are closer. How many more games do you have? I've never seen a game with kids that young, I'll bet it's so much fun to watch.

no- league starts after Christmas- First game is early March (NEVER NEVER have a sports league in Buffalo in the winter- Way too many cancellations!) Losing badly does build character- But it is hard to see the dissapointment on the kids face- Yea losing sucks!

we won last night by a long shot. my child scored her 1st basket!! the look on her face was of shock then joy then more delayed joy. i had to really work hard not to cry.
5 wins - 2 losses (both to the same team). if we win tonight we are tied for 2nd place and the last 2 games are against the team we are tied with. if we lose tonight we have to win the last 2 games to be tied again for 2nd place. wish us luck!

we won and it was a race with the clock. we were winning 9 to 6 and it was back and forth up and down the court and anything could happen right until the end when we scored 4 more points. it really was a good game except the other teams best player purposely elbowed our best player in the eye. i already had her scheduled to be out the next section so she had time to recover and i'm so glad she wasn't really hurt. it got really heated after that with one of my players taking an opponent down in a bear hug. i had to give them a quick lecture that we aren't after their players just the ball.
sands this is vicious stuff. my mom called me yesterday to complement me on how nice i have been throughout it all. i stay positive and kind no matter what happens. my team members are courteous players. but believe me it is vicious. i worry about my child more than all the rest because she is not vicious. she snatched the ball from an opponent then was totally freaked when she realized she actually had the ball. she was trying to hand it to anyone else lol. she knew 5 people were fixing to be all over her and she wanted that ball out of her hands. i had forgotten how much of a contact sport basketball is and that a foul isn't always accidental.
these next 2 games are going to be hard. everybody wants to win - the players, the parents, the coaches. no matter what happens tomorrow night, we can still go back to a tied position on monday night. it will be very intense, very loud, very aggressive. kim

i was so rattled last night i couldn't even tell y'all about it. both teams decided to play the 2 games back to back and get it over with last night instead of playing the last one on monday. the 1st game was a super game with us staying tied most of the game and at the last minute the other team pulled ahead and won. the 2nd game went into overtime 3 times and we finally agreed to call it as a tie for 2nd place and all got trophies. 2 extremely well matched teams and if we won we'd have to play a 3rd game to break the tie. but what rattled me was the parents - screaming at their children, snatching their arms, telling them they were going to punish them. the children were getting more and more heated on the court because their parents were coming down on them so hard. so we had to make a decision to call it before someone got hurt. the poor ref was under vicious fire so i made a point to go shake his hand and tell him he did a great job all season. he looked stunned and very appreciative to hear a kind word. i had players leaving crying because they knew they were in trouble with their parents. not mine, she was skipping along - la, la, la - i got a trophy lol. the parents on both sides should have been so proud of the season their girls played no matter where we placed. they had progressed beautifully and it showed.

Good one on your team for taking 2nd place, that was a good idea to call the tie that way and keep the peace. Some parents are more interested in the game play than their children's feelings, that's very sad and very hard on the kids.

Kim You can not spell sportsmanship out of the letters in the word parent. They should not try to relive their past glories?? by trying to recapture them through their children. But that is how parents act and think. Kids should not have to endure parents attending their games but how do you get around it?? Parents should realize that they can embarrass the devil out of their kids when they the parents act like little kids. Pete
