I promised my sister I would get her a truck load of oak firewood....something she just can not get out there in the wild west...a.k.a. Arizona. So here I go....got my chainsaw,,,gas, oil..tools and the truck... I selected a rather big tree for this project....something I later regreted big time. First...started the chainsaw and the chain would not budge at all...took it all apart,,found some burrs on the chain that would not allow it to move in the guide...now off to the grinder I go...get that fixed..all is well until.... I made my cuts on the front side of the tree. and started on the back side when about halfway thru it decided it wanted to fall in the wrong direction....right on the fence...so..here I go after the truck and get some chains,,tie them around the tree and drop it into 4 wheel drive and give a mighty tug...nothing happened. I went back to cutting on the back side of the tree when it started going in the right direction so I stepped back to let her fall....wrong move... I stepped in a little drop-off and fell into some very unforgiving thorn bushes...what a treat. So now the tree is down and I am ready to cut it up into little pieces....wrong..notice how the chain always breaks when you need it the most? So off to town I go...get a new chain get it home and put it on...all's well so far. By now I have about 3/4 of the tree cut up and loaded onto my trailer.....ran out of gas. So, tomorrow I go get more gas..get the rest of the tree cut up...rent a log splitter and make little pieces out of the big pieces..load it on the truck and trailer and never again volunteer to cut firewood for anyone else.
I am so sore I can hardly move.....I do seem to overwork when I get out there to do these sort of tasks. ...and how was your day?

But Pho, today was Thanksgiving, you were supposed to be home eating too much with the rest of your family. My neighbor quit doing that too after falling out of her deer hunting stand a couple years ago and breaking her leg. I'm glad, she was making me really nervous out there with that chainsaw (she's 72) but every year up to that she'd cut, split and stack seven cords of firewood. It was a very nice thing you did for your sister, think of how much she'll enjoy it.

As for family...my son is in California and I have no other family except my wife's family and this bunch of rock nuts here. I am getting something out of all this wood cutting....a 1970 TR6 which is in need of a total overhaul. The body is in great shape, just needs a little paint. The interior needs major work as does the engine. This will be my long term project car.....I expect this to take me at least 3 years to complete...have to do a little bit at a time....unless I hit the lottery...

Hey, Pho. That TR6 makes a great project car for a Chevy 383/350! There are still kits that drop right in. I know the feeling though. It gets better, not easier, better. Hang in there. I used to be a tree climber/topper, and later I became a residential pruner. I used to go up in a rope and saddle and spend all day trying to save broken trees. I would go up in the morning, and not come down untill it almost became too dark to cut. Back then, I was a body builder and weighed over 300lbs. Sometimes the leader I would tie off would seperate and I would hit every ugly stick on the way down. Of course I would do it alone, I was too cheap to pay a ground person. I got bit by that once in a while. Good luck, and enjoy the TR6.

Your sister should be very Thankful today to have a brother like you. I'm glad you are ok and not seriously hurt. Does it get cold enough there for firewood? Guess I never thought about that before!

Pho-
Sorry to hear of your saga but I think lots of things happen for a reason and someday you'll look back and remember your ordeal and know why it had to be that way.
You sound like a great dude and good brother. I would hope my son (s) would do that for their sister (s).

Darn firewood, huh? We make around 14 cords for our place and 7 cords for my mom (use to do an extra 5 -6 for the old house.. not this year) After it's all dragged in, cut, split and stacked it never fails, we start getting the comments about how "lucky" we are to have wood heat. Most of our friends and in laws are out playing in the fall, traveling, out 4 wheeling, etc. while we're making wood. Anytime now, maybe another month, usually January, we'll hear the same old "Do you have any extra firewood?" Grumble, grumble. Anyone remember the story of the ant and the grass hopper?

Family, :Dwe happily do so much for family. But without family what would we really have. Not a whole he-l of a lot I'll tell you. And sometimes it is hard to believe but 99.9% of the time our efforts are appreciated. Pho your a better man for your experience for what doesn't kill us inproves us or some such melarky. Pete

Pho, I feel your pain....literally! Split about about a cord and a half of wood today. Even using a log splitter, it is still hard work. I borrowed the log splitter from a buddy. He was moving the log splitter around like it was nothing. I could barely budge the thing. I guess that is the difference between a guy who delivers kegs of beer for a living vs. a guy who pushes a pencil all day! And, of all the joys, my neighber helped me today, so we'll be splitting his wood tommorow. Hopefully, his son will come over to give us a hand. I need a hot shower! Cal

I am getting something out of all this wood cutting....a 1970 TR6 which is in need of a total overhaul. Hey, that TR6 is cool. I did something similar with a 1960 VW Karmann Ghia. Like your estimate, it took me about three years. I have been driving it around a bit this summer working out the final mechanical bugs. I still have the interior to finish off, which is mostly just bare painted metal at the moment. Click on my home page to see some pictures of it. One needs something to do while waiting for the rocks to tumble! Good luck!
