Anyone lookin' for a cute & cuddly pet? Opened the back door one nite & found this guy making himself at home in the box made for the homeless/stray kitties that come to visit every now & then. Pebbles

How cute- I usually see possums just before they flop under the tire of my truck (sorry I try to avoid em- and I feel bad when I can't- but I swear they are one of gods dumber creatures)

I shoot several of those a year down here. They come on the deck and eat the cat's food. Like Stefen said..those are some dumb critters...

Dumb is an understatement when describing those creatures!!!
I took a spray bottle of water & was squirting it in the face to try to get it to leave. Darn thing just sat there & took it. I really felt bad afterwards, but I couldn't figure how else to get it to leave without hurting it.
Haven't seen it since, so maybe it learned something ( but somehow I doubt it ).

I wouldn't worry too much about hurting it! Just stay out of range of those teeth. Have you ever seen one get mad? Trish

I am familiar with the ugly tails of those critters. When I was a kid my Shepard used to kill about one a week, used to grab 'em by the tail and throw 'em over the fence back to the oil fields. Not my favorite animal.
My, what pretty blue eyes she has. The rest of her is UGLY!

Overgrown rats is what they look like to me!
No, I've never seen one get mad. I'm surprised that one didn't, with it being cornered in the box like that.

O'possum. Vhat a critter. They can really be something when they are defending themselves. I know you feel bad after spraying it, but, what could you really do? I doubt you would feel any better if you shot it, or knew it was enjoying the comfort of your home. Of all the things you could have done, spraying it was probably the best unless it commanded more. Suprises like that are fun though, looking back. I have never heard of one being house broken. Not like a skunk, or praire dog. You did the right thing, and I appreciate the photo. Kinda cool.

Poor, dumb thing. I'm glad it had a warm nights sleep. Somebody's gotta feel for 'em. Bless you for not hurting it. Poor dumb thing.

Yeah, a surprise it was indeed! Especially since that box sits just outside the back door on the porch not even 3 ft away from the door opening. Thought it was gonna make a run for inside the house, like the cats do - just barely cracked open the door enuff to take a pic.

cute it may be but it has a nice set of cat like teeth, best thing to do is avoid them...unless you want to eat them. My dad use to hunt and eat them. Actually he would trap them, feed them cornbread and buttermilk for several days to clean them out, then he would kill and eat them. We make fun of him now for it, so laugh all you want.

Ahhhh....thanks but no thanks! LOL! Yes they do have a way of getting into places where they shouldn't. I am always amazed at how big they can get. Let alone how many babies they can have. Sorry I will have to pass on this one! LOL!

Yeah, psossums and armadillos, the only real predator that keeps their numbers in check is the automobile. Do away with the automobile and the armadillos and possums would take over the world. Ron

Sometimes - when I look at the stars, and wonder what the hell is going on on earth, I get confused. I mean - REALLY CONFUSED. Im not talking about "how good a payrise is" or "the politicians have done this or that" - I mean about why we are here and what is the universe all about. Then - sometimes - I can see a picture of a creature like this (or look at a creature itself) - and just a bit - I mean just a tiny bit - things fall into place when I look at the blackness of its pupils and the awareness it has of its surroundings. When I look a bit harder, I realize that humans are such a tiny bit more than the Possum (for instance) in the absolute sheer and awesome size of twisting spacetime, that they may aswell be **us**. What Im trying to say is that the difference between us and the Possum - on this earth - seems quite large. In cosmological terms though - we are the same as the Possum. If we remember relativity (soz if Im waffling) we will note that (for example) the speed of an object is measured relative to the observer (except for light). I think I can safely say (pause) that an observer from another planet **may** see very little difference between humans and the possum. Its only from our position that we see the Possum as very different from ourselves. An observer from another planet may see humans and possums as the same thing - that is - "something crawling around on a rock". I think its a stormer of a creature.

i put out food for the local ones here in the winter. they love a bit of fresh fruit. dumb as a post tho. so, Mark, you are right, humans and possums are quite a lot alike.

KD - yes - we are alike. An observer who is as big as the universe will see the possum and the human as equals. He/she (the observer of the universe and entire cosmos) - probably wouldnt even notice life on earth - nevermind a difference between different forms of life on earth. Its a tough one to understand - a pair of blinking eyes as big as spacetime itself looking at our current explosion (the big bang) material - simply wouldnt even notice us. We are - we are indeed - very very very very very small. Just like that possum - just the same as him, so I say look after him - dont shoot him. Give him a brew then let him go and do as he will on this little tiny rock he finds himself on.
