My husband, being unhappy with my mood swings, bought me a mood ring the other day so he would be able to monitor my moods. We've discovered that when I'm in a good mood, it turns green. When I'm in a bad mood, it leaves a big red mark on his forehead. Maybe next time he'll buy me a diamond!!!
I got this from a freind in my e-mail today Ed

I still have a bunch of original mood rings I sell in my shop. They are a little more affordable today vs., yesterday. Today, I take out the stone, and set it in either silver, or gold. Takes longer to show "moods".

What are the stones in mood rings Doc? is it natural or man made?
Would be neat to have some to tumble.... certainly would be an interesting batch.

That's too funny!
So what kind of stone are those mood rings made from? Man-made I presume...
If I remember right, don't they get all screwed up & not "work right" if ya get them wet?

They are light sensitive thermo plastic. IF you get them wet, they do not show colour untill they dry. When I set them in silver, or gold, I do not glue them down. The water messed with the glue.

awww, I wanted to tumble some. thanks for letting us know Doc.
I do have one rock that changes color with temperature though (not like a mood ring). It changes from baby pink to a light brown color. I have no idea what it is... came in the bunch of rocks that hubby brought home.
Suppose I could order up some alexandrite... but it's much too expensive

I have 400cts of early Alexandrite, unfaceted, sitting in my rough tray. I have 10 6mm purple Alexandrite, I have one 12X24 Emerald cut Alexandrite, and I have one 435ct Tanzanite trillion, the only one in the world known to exist. Maybe I can get Sands to photo it this weekend for show and tell. Mood rings were early experiments in thermo plastic using different resins. They do not tumble, they disappear. In summer here, they turn deep black. It gets that hot here. Everybody drags around.

I guess mood rings are made of the same plastic as those thermometer strips you glue onto your fish tank. nope not tumbable for sure!
That alexandrite sure does sound nice. Hope Sands is able to take pictures. Where did you get your rough from Doc?

I got my Alexandrite rough from the same individual who sold me her Ultratec. Sands has seen the machine. It is all digital, with all the upgrades. It has been calibrated to 1micron paralell X 5ft. The machine also came with 20 discs from 80grit to 5800grit, with a ceramic lap, and a pile of ultralaps. She was dying and came to my shop to have me make her some unusual settings for her grandchildren. No other jeweler would touch her work, and the few that would even talk to her gave quotes in the thousands for simple settings. The setings were for the last stones she had cut before she went into chemo. We talked lapidary for a bit, and she was going to give me the machine but she did not feel it was right for me, her grandchildren, or the principle. I agreed with her. When I made the settings, I did not even know she had a faceter. This was extra. She was a top scholar IGA gemologist and teacher. One of the last old schoolers. For making a few simple settings, she gave me essentially the value of an house in tools! Another old dying person gave me a piece of rough. It is one of only five known to exist on this planet. One day, I am going to make a pendant I have seen in my head for about 10yrs. Maybe I will have Sands take a picture of that stone. I am cutting it, roughing it out actually, to transfer it to my special purpose machine. It will be an emerald cut, cut for weight. We freeze dried Hippies do like the off the wall stuff from back then, don't we. I stilll have my original MOOD RING box! Yeah, the Mood Rings were the predecessor to the thermo strip thermometers. They sure were fun though! We used to go door to door selling Mood Rings. I got 25$ each for them! That was a lot back then. One ring used to be worth one lid, or three fingers. I miss the old days, things made sense back then.

So what is that experimental material used for now? A weapon of mass destruction?
