Ok, I know my husband will probably get mad at me for this, but I'm only starting this thread because I love him! I want him to quit smoking cigarettes (tobacco). I know he has to want to to be successful. But if he sees it can be done, maybe it will inspire him to. If there are any of you out there that has done it, please give us your tips and how much you used to smoke and why you wanted to quit and what you do when you get the urge to start again. I'd appreciate it!

My mom quit cold turkey. I think my brother did too. My mom quit a couple winters ago. She ran out of cigs but we'd just had an ice storm and she didn't want to go walking in it. Then she found out she had all this extra money at the end of the month since she wasn't buying cigs. She's an amazing woman. She was not supposed to survive her ovarian cancer that she was dx'ed with back in 1990. Well, she's still alive and kickin at 74.
So tell e-dog he'd probably have alot more money he could put to his hobby if he quit. Tell him you won't even bitch at him for spending cig money on rocks.

Damn, woman, I quit smoking pot last year, what more do ya want? I have to die of something, at least I'll know what it'll be from. If I stop smoking, can we get that new street glide in May?

poke lotsa holes in the cigarettes with sewing needles, flush them down the toilet... I had many tricks when I was young (dad wasn't too happy with me back then) but he eventually quit cold turkey - my MIL did too - she couldn't afford to smoke anymore...
One day at a time is the best way
EDog a much better way to die is happy, bleeding to death because of a rock you cut open (but you got to see the inside of it first!) Oh, you've already done that!

I don't know if I could get away with sabotaging his supply and I know nagging won't help. But incentives do motivate most people! Yes, Earthdog, if you quit smoking, which will save you about an average of $2,912.00 per year, you can get a motorcycle!
Yep, he already cut himself open with a rock yesterday! I think he needs a babysitter when he's home alone!

Yep, he already cut himself open with a rock yesterday! I think he needs a babysitter when he's home alone! LOL @ Takila ... that's what I was thinking when I saw his duct tape bandage. I've quit a cold turkey a few times (for 1-3 years each time) then something would happen and I'd start back up again. I don't even like them, couldn't stand the way I smelled so I quit again last July and am determined ... never again. My hubby still smokes but when I quit I told him no more around me so he's had to make due with other areas, outside or one room upstairs. He smells like an ashtray .... yuck. Anyway, this time around it's Wellbutrin (zyban). I wasn't even planning on quitting but doc put me on it for personal reasons and one day I realized I had only smoked two cigs the day before ... I'm like what the hell, just quit, so I did. For awhile I'd still get the urge to grab one so I got some lemon drops and would pop one of those in my mouth instead. The tartness of the lemon drop took away any urge to smoke. This was how my father quit some 30 years ago too only his was just the lemon drops, nothing else. First thing you have to do .... no more smoking in the house. Think of your daughter, you want her to stink like an ashtray or take up the filthy habit? Second ... don't carry them with you. Leave them in the garage where you have to make an effort to go out to have one, that gets old pretty quick. Third, think of that bike ... good luck on getting it. Takila, you need to add a stipulation to that agreement. He can't "quit" the day before, he's got to be off of smokes for at least 2 months. Don't hate me earthdog, it's for your own good.

I quit cold turkey on Nov 3, 1991 and haven't smoked since. No, it isn't that its such a terrible thing to not smoke, that I remember the day, it's the day my Mom passed away. I know, bad timing, eh? She had wanted me to quit for a number of years and I kept telling her "some day" Mom, "some day". Well I guess that was the "some day" . . . . My quitting was harder on my hubby than me, I think! All I remember about it is that I was tense and irritable for awhile . . . Bob says if I EVER start smoking again and decide to quit again, he's filing for divorce! LOL!

I used patches (1 hefty one per day) and a fake cig with a nocotine cartridge. 14 days - full strength patch (one per day) - 12 nico cartridges. then 14 days - half strength patch (one per day) - 12 nico cartridges. then 7 days no patch - 12 nico cartridges then 7 days no patch - 10 nico cartridges then Till now - gradual reduction in nico cartridges - 5 per day now. (The above is more or less accurate - maybe a day or two off the mark here and there) Its a total doddle (if you actually want to stop). I got to about 60-70 ciggs per day - I HAD to stop No problem doing it like this - just taking my time and weeding it out Hope that helps earth dog I reckon its so easy with this - if I can do it anyone can. www.nicorette.co.uk/products/inhalator.aspCheck it out - you may have the same thing over there. Here ciggs are approx $10 us dollars per box of 20 - so at about 32 $ per day - I saved 11,680 USD per year Good luck

YaY Mark, good for you for keeping on!! Those cigs over there must be lined with gold at that price. Hubby's still paying about $40.00 per carton ... he says he's trying but I'm not seeing it yet.

i quit in November of 2000, used the patch and went through about ten thosand bar straws (chewed on them continously). i had smoked since i was 14 years old and was up to well over 2 packs a day (3 on a friday or saturday if we were partying). i never thought i'd be able to do it and now wonder why i smoked as long as i did......i've saved well over 10,000 dollars in not buying ciggerettes, i feel better and certainly SMELL better. i also don't have to huddle outside in the rain or snow looing like a jerk to get my fix. i also got a lot of help from a message board: www.quitnet.comthat has a lot of other people out there trying to quit too. i also took a tip from a friend and lost some weight BEFORE i quit so that those extra little "busy snacks" didn't get to me so badly. good luck, eDog, i know you can do it, it isn't easy, but it's not impossible if you really want to do it. I quit cold turkey...the urges stay for awhile but I do not believe I will ever smoke again (It is starting to smell vile to me). My wife urged (no, she didn't force me, I have my own mind, but she helped make me feel I was disappointing someone who should be near and dear) me into quitting so she deserves the credit. I hated her for it at the time but now I see the light.
We all die of something, that is so so true, but I'd rather have some say in how I go and smoking (lung cancer) is not my first choice; wouldn't old age be preferable?
If you are observent you will see that there are less old people who smoke and fewer fat people as you get older; that's the one I'm working on now and it's just as hard to eat right as it is to quit smoking but I want to live longer that my wife and be the one who gives the gravy(inheritence) away; I guess that is selfish but it is inspirational too.

Well I was only 21 when I quit cigarettes, but I had been smoking since I was 9, yes I said 9. But at 21 I was up to 3 packs a day and coughing my head off every morning, sometimes so bad I could not stand straight. One morning I had enough, picked up the pack and threw it away. I still smoked cigars and pipe, but not nearly as often, sometimes not for years at a time. Finally about 3 years ago I quit entirely. My motivation was I didn't want to feel bad every morning, so I wanted to quit. I truly believe having a good reason to quit, and wanting to quit is the best way. Terry

One thing I really remember this time around was about a month or so after I quit, I woke up one morning and my hair was laying across my face. It smelled really good, not like a stale ashtray, I was really amazed and pleased. Another thing I did, I promised my grandkids I would never smoke again. I never smoked in front of them anyway, smoking around the babies was not allowed.
I hope all of you that are trying are able to do it and not go back ... good luck to all of you!!
