Not because I want to make one, but because my 11 year old daughter created one! I'm not computer illiterate by any means, neither is my husband who can put one together & set it up for anyone, but when he found out my daughter created a web page with pictures of herself & her little brother, I freaked out!
for two reasons: 1) because I really don,t want her posting stuff on the internet & 2) how in heck did she do that? doesn,t it take HTML coding to set up a page? & $$$ to host or buy hosting time?
She's supposed to take it down, but I'm worried about what else she's doing on the internet?

Is she on MySpace.com? That isn't a great site for kids although they seem to flock to it. My nephew (12) just got into some hot water with my brother and sis-in-law because he was on there and viewing and posting some nasty stuff.
MySpace makes it very easy to use HTML for personal page setup.

Alot of places provide websites where all you have to do is upload the photos and VOILA, instant website. Then there are programs like Wordpress and Drupal. There are still some free places (geocities or myspace, for instance). It is extremely easy to do and frankly, I don't know how you can stop it short of looking over her shoulder every second she is online.
I would suggest talking to her about your concerns and let her know about the dangers of sharing private information in a public forum. I think it would go alot further than flat-out banning her from the internets. Teach her how to stay safe and I bet she listens alot better than if you say "don't do that."

What they said. My youngest sister (15) and oldest niece (10) have recently had the same talk. My sister was a little more cagey about her information, but she posted pics of her and her friends all over the place. And then she linked to her friends who linked to their friends who had locations and names plastered all over. My niece was much more blantant. Pictures, names, ages, locations - including street address. More and more sites have made it easy to throw something up on the Web. They have starter kits, free templates, free hosting - to a certain point. They want to make it easy for the technically challenged to join the great Web. They want Mom and Pop to tell the world about the afghan that Mom crocheted that just won a ribbon. MySpace is a parent's nightmare.

Do what everyone said previously. It's not hard to make a web page. Another way is if you have Microsoft Word all you do is save your document, along with any embedded pictures, in HTML format - instant web page. Other programs do the same; you don't have to know anything about HTML.

Well - you just type in what you want to say and the FTP it up to a host. Then people can see it. You need to learn about FTP, HOSTING - then you will be well on your way.

I don't want to do a web page, I wanna take that one down, imagining that she had started learning HTML before she could do long division....

Tweety, you don't have to learn html anymore, there's all kinds of programs that code it for you now. Almost all of the free places, like geocities have built in programs that do all the coding for you. I'm sure to remove her's you'll need her password to get in. Just tell her ... with you right there, remove it or no computer time. Kind of like being in a severe timeout. Kids have no idea these days what kind of bad stuff is out there when they are talking and chatting so freely.

There are a ton of free websites out there, and all you have to do is upload the pics. You have to know her password to take it down, they all have passwords. If you're worried that she has another, just keep checking the internet history and the temporary internet files.

Or better yet, purchase for a small $29 bucks a program like SSPro. It'll track all the websites a computer has been. If she is smart enough to post stuff and "create" her own content, she's probably way ahead of you on clearing the history and temp files. SSPro is very sophisticated and can even block questionable sites like Myspace.com or RTH.....LOL. SSPro can also be downloaded for a free trial version (for a month or so.) It may be worth it to you. It'll also send alerts to a email account when preconfigured sites or keywords are typed. This may be a bit too invasive for you, but sometimes you need to protect your little ones. The Internet community can be as bad and deadly as anything and people prey on our children all the time. Good luck and let us know if you have any additional concerns.
Gaetz
Sorry to hear of this and don't doubt how scary this must be.

I run my web site totally free, and make a few extra $ from it by promoting company products (I carry no stock what so ever... the companies do all the work) It's very simple to post up a web page / web site members.fortunecity.com/alices_workshop/To take one down, you'll need her user name and password. Hope she gives it to you. Who is the site hosted by? If it's your ISP, then it might be easy for you to just make a quick phone call.

I just heard some crap last night on one of the news channels about that "myspace" site. If it were my kid, I'd do my best to keep them out of there. They were talking about the "bully"s on there and how some schools are trying to include this site in their practices of "no bullying allowed". Some kind of fight going on because they are doing this bullying from their home computers so are getting away with it.
