I think you may have seen something about this because I think it made national news. But Saturday morning, a madman walked into a house where he was invited to an after-party and started shooting. Six people died before he turned the shotgun on himself.
My stepdaughter is into that rave scene. Now, I certainly don't blame that scene at all. She's educated us enough to know that it isn't just some wild, uncontrolled thing and this shooting did not happen at the main event. I had the wife call her daughter to see if she was ok. It ends up she knows a few of the victims. Then she dropped the bombshell that she had been invited to that same after-party but didn't go.
So we are all just kind of between tears and numb at this whole senseless tragedy that almost hit way too close to home.
Sometimes, I really wonder about people.

Apparently the shooter wasn't invited to the party either, and wasn't part of the crowd that was attending. He didn't have much of a record, no violence in his past or other signals something like this might happen... Truly a tragedy all the way around, the police are scrambling trying to make sense of it all, too

I was reading on CNN last night that he was invited to the party. Left it at 7:00am and returned with the guns.
He had also been arrested in the past for shooting at a statue of a moose at some art festival or something.
Drugs? Mentally imbalanced? Very sad in any case.

I'd say mentally imbalanced and some hard drugs. This probably wouldn't have happened if he would have just stayed home, smoked a joint and had a nice glass of wine. Very sad stuff. Ya never know when someone is gonna snap. Another reason the backwoods of Montana looks good to me.

Hawke, I'm glad your step daughter is ok and that she didn't go. Someone was watching out for her. It's a senseless tragedy. I think it would have made the news at any rate because of the numbers killed, but because it was the "rave" crowd its more sensational. The news can now point out the "evil" from that type of event.
I guess what shocked me was the age range of the people. From early 30's to teens. And when I say teens I mean young teens. I guess what I'm wondering is why the parents of said young teens allowed them to be out where there was alcohol and such at 7 a.m.
My condolences to the friends and families of those lost.

The parents probably allowed them to go to the rave because it was an all-ages event and the promoters of it have a stellar reputation. EVERYONE was screened for drugs and weapons. They didn't even allow ppl to bring in their own gum for fear of drugs sneaking in. And there was no alcohol at the event either. The event also had the full support of the police and fire departments.
To anyone who wants to say well, this is to be expected at such a thing, I'd just have to point out the 5 homicides at Denny's restaurants in southern california and ask if this means no one should go to Denny's because they might get shot. Frankly, I'd say they shouldn't go to Denny's for the crappy food.
Oh yeah, I was talking about the MAIN event. The only thing I know about the after-party is it was not sponsored by the main event and cops found some marijuana and booze inside, and there were roughly 30 people attending said party.

Wow, that is way too close for comfort, Hawke! How is your stepdaughter doing after this close call? She must feel pretty shook up.

I don't know. Hopefully, we'll get in contact with her tonight.
She was our problem child growing up. But now that she is in her mid-20's, she is a real delight to be around and has completely turned her life around. We've met alot of all 3 kids' friends and they are a polite, respectful bunch. They give me hope.

Hawke I think you misunderstood me, I was speaking of the after party. 15 year old kids, IMHO should not be allowed to stay out till 7 am at parties. I understand the actual rave was well supervised etc.

E-dog, the guy that did it was from Montana. He moved here with his twin brother... who apparently doesn't know much about it. And I miss-spoke earlier... he was apparently invited... but he wasn't part of the normal crowd attending the after party. People from the party said he was at the rave, and was giving off a weird vibe... and they invited him to the after party cause they thought that vibe might make things more interesting. I guess that falls under the heading of be careful what you wish for What a tragedy, at any rate. People who knew the killer are describing him as a "teddy bear", polite and helpful. Makes the whole thing all the more baffling. One of his first victims was a 14 year old girl out on the porch. Such a shame.

Yes I do have to wonder wtf the parents were thinking letting their 14-15 daughters stay out all night. That is, until I remembered what our daughters were like at that age. For all we know, they could have stayed out against their parents' wishes. Seems these were acquaintances of the daughter. She didn't know them well but had seen them at other parties. I think she's just a little shook up as are alot of us in the region. No doubt she'll be more aware of her surroundings at future events. Robert L. Jamieson, one of my favorite local columnists, has a great column about the tragedy. You can find his latest here: seattlepi.nwsource.com/jamieson/264593_robert28.html
