Slag off ye surly bilge rats! Sorry, I missed Talk Like a Pirate Day so I had to get that out. I won't be missing this year though, I'll be sure to be drivin' the wife up the wall wife that. A wife who happens to be turning 40 and a wife who would indeed think Rooney's commentary was funny. (and Talk Like a Pirate Day)

Well I said a little unsettling. I did smile (I don't often laugh).
I guess my reaction was not as strong as toad, and some folks may have thought I was voicing stronger objections than I was.
Maybe I just don't like Andy Rooney, and was prepared to find some fault. As I've found the world to be an incredibly complex place, and wisdom to be finding simplicity only after appreciating the complexity it condenses, I grew to dislike commentators like Rooney who's stock in trade is the constant suggestion that its simple, or its obvious, or its ludricrous to think any way but the way I do ...
I like humor that hits you in layers, and lets you enter visually or projectively. Possibly imagining yourself saying the punch line, or being an observer hearing the punch line. But then I always like to walk around in things.
Picture a traffic cop standing next to a convertible on the side of the road with three very drunken (insert: college students, business men, conventioneers ...) in the back seat.
"honest officer", hic, "no one was driving", hic.
Somehow the absurdity of the assertion, sitting next to the knowledge that it might be well within the behavior of some intoxicated folk, but really within our cultural stereotype of the affable drunk - is funny to me. I find myself imagining I was making the statement, or imagining the moments before when the plans was hatched without thinking it through, or I imagine being the officer and hearing this.
No matter where I walk within the frame, it just kind of tickles.
But yes, you can go outside the frame and say, "I don't find drunk driving funny at all." Maybe I went a outside the frame on Andy, but he just annoys me.
But it is all good. I like the thread. I like hearing funny things, I like hearing what others do and don't find funny - and why. I like talking about what I think. I'm very metacognitive.
Cheers everyone.
