Fractal is a term meaning fractional dimension. Think of a cloud. While it is obviously not a two dimensional structure it is also not a full three dimensional structure. If it were it would be solid like a mountain. Therefore a cloud is a fractional dimension between two and three dimensions. The above images are two dimensional since that is the only way they can appear on your screen. The images represent a fractional dimension in mathmatical space. Ok, maybe I can't explain it! Pass those brownies please!

Fractals are created by echoing/repeating a geometric shape using mathematical equations. The art comes into HOW the shape is repeated/displayed. Technical (or not so technical) definition: A fractal is a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be subdivided in parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole. Fractals are generally self-similar and independent of scale. I really like the 2nd and 4th ones.

I'm so amazed at the diversity of the folk here at RTH! One minute we can be discussing the pro's & con's of flatulence (sp- sorry) & the next thing you know...we are deep into the merits of various arts! How cool is that?

Cool! For what it's worth, here is link to a program you can download that lets you make fractals. It's fairly basic, not as sophisticated as the ones shown above, but it is fun to play around with. It's a ZIP file so you have to unzip it, and there are no instructions, but it was fairly easy to figure out. spanky.triumf.ca/pub/fractals/programs/ibmpc/windows/winf1821.zip
