There's a family of freakin' idiots moved in up the street from me. Now they've gone and bought this 6 year old a damn four wheeler and are letting him ride up and down the streets here. He doesn't stop at the stop sign, goes 90 miles an hour back up the street and neither of his parents are outside watching him.
This is a very very bad intersection he's running through. It's a four way stop but the avenue is a main line for highschoolers and they generally go flying right through the stop sign without even looking. The kids going to get run over and his parents don't appear to give a rats ass.
They've got plenty of property, he could right from behind their house down to the next street without going on the road. Oh and by the way, there's laws in this town/state so they are raising him to break the law.
What the hell is wrong with parents these day? It was bad enough when tv came along and they used it as a babysitter but something your kid could get seriously hurt on?
Not to mention I'm sick and tired of hearing this thing racing up and down the street.
Sorry to be venting, I'm just really angry over this.

Well, you've got a couple of options here...
You could take the "concerned citizen" route of action
OR, you could just sit back & watch Darwin in action...

I'm no creationist. Good one, LCARS. And the odds are he's fat and on Ritalin.

LOL He's not fat, I don't know if he's on Ritalin or not. What I do know is they also were letting the five year old ride it. This is not a kiddie four wheeler, it's one I could easily handle. I also know that the law in Minnesota is no one under 16 though there isn't anyone who pays attention to that. In our town, ATV's on the street are a big nono if you get caught. I don't have a camcorder but my dc does take short movies ... good idea. My hubby and I (both in our 50's) are the youngest people on the street except for them, I talked to my neighbor, she's just as mad.
I found another way these people are just none caring at all. They also have a dog they let run supposedly supposed to have an electric collar on. My 72 yo neighbor was sitting at her table last week when here comes some guy up the sidewalk in a wheelchair. Thank God she was watching, the neighbors dog came running and was about ready to attack this guy ... he was terrified. She ran out and started hollering at the dog to get away from him. The guy was near tears thanking her, he didn't even have a motorized wheelchair, if the dog had bit his arm or something ...
*sigh* Frustration abounds, I really hate being pissy and for now at least they've put it away. Funny thing though, as he rounds the corner and heads off down the street, he's driving right past a cops house.

I still say file a police report....at least that way if something does happen...there will be a record of what is going on there. Don't guess it would help to talk to the parents.....

I gonna guess that there isn't much chance of talking sense into these folks but it might be worth a try. Pictures are worth a thousand words when is comes to working with the police so get a few of those. If you simply report a complaint to the police they realy can't do anything about it other than talk with them and they may just run the police off their property. With pictures the police can press the correct charges and actualy do something about it. Good luck Cher.

Give The Department of Social Services a call. Child endangerment! Get with the neighbors, and each time the kid goes out on the road, all of you call the police at the same time! And keep calling and demand action! Animal Control for vicious dog. The local TV station may want to get in on this too when the cops do nothing! And as folks said pictures, signed statements. Dose your neighborhood have restrictive deed covenants? If so a trip to the magistrates office may be in order. Hope this helps.
btw The 12th Will Be A Good Day!

I would love to chime it about stupid parents, but sometimes the parents don,t know what the kid is doing... case in point: my now 6 year old son (who's only 42" tall) plays with 13 year olds (he'll play with anyone and the big kids like him because he's a daredevil - I've had to forbid him from playing with kids more than 2 years older than him) - our neighbor's kid (his best friend is almost 8) asked him to climb onto the supermailbox (not sure if you guys in the states have these, but they're the neighborhood mailbox - they're about 5.5 feet high & look like the boxes where the mailpeople pick up their mail sachels - he climbed on top (I have no idea how and I somewhat trust him when he goes in the neighborhood (it's like a "wand" shape so less traffic than on the edge where I live) - but I won't trust him anymore) and the neighbor asked him to jump off with an umbrella like a parachute - needless to say I found out about this and forbade him to play with this kid (who last summer asked my son to ride down the backyard hill on a broken bike - we caught him in time and the neighbor had to do it himself - needless to say he hurt himself - hubby & I both muttered "good for him!" as he ran home crying
I do however agree that no kid that young should be allowed to drive those things - until they get their licence - What are parents thinking letting them have something like that, not only could they hurt themselves, but they could hurt others too - too bad the kid is gonna suffer for the parents ignorance
However imbecile/unruly my son is, I still try to look out for him as best I can but I wouldn,t willingly let him do something that I KNOW is dangerous - short of tying/locking him up, (which doesn't work on my Houdini/Superman) I have to be very watchful

When a dog is running loose threatening an old guy in a wheelchair, a call to the cops is definitely in order. When the cops are called, they'll be the ones to tell the "neighbors" (aka culprits) to keep the kid off the streets and the dog restrained.

If your neighbors are new to the area, I would suggest explaining to them the dangers of where their son is riding. During the course of the conversation, you might slip in the fact that it's against local ordinances. As it was pointed out earlier, they might not really know what he's doing at all, and also might not be aware of the pitfalls in your area. Always give them a chance first - then report it to the hilt to all agencies that might be interested.

P.S. Document, document, document!
As far as the dog goes, the owners should be well aware that almost anywhere you go in this country, there are leash laws, etc. Document the incident and report it.
Imagine yourself in court over anything related to the child or the dog. Do you want to be sitting there with a defense attorney asking you why you were aware of the situation, and yet didnt' say anything about it? Or can't be specific about what you said or when?

I would put animal control, the police and child protection services on speed dial, and ask your other neighbors to do the same. Usually repetition is the only way to get anything done. Your peace should not be infringed upon by inconsiderate neighbors. And those kids could get seriously hurt! Or hurt someone else for that matter.

i would definitely call the police. if you've got a good relationship with the neighborhood cop, i'd call him and ask his assistance.

Unfortunately, I don't even know the cops name. They moved in a couple of years ago and we've never met them. Pretty sad, I've lived here for 18 years now, I know the people on my block but that's about all. So far it hasn't started up yet today but if it does, I'm going to call. Can't talk to the parents, things got so bad the year they were building the house that no one talks to each other now. The sad part is, most of the problem was caused by the contractor but it caused enough problem that we just ignore each other completely now. Anything I do or say, they'll say I'm picking at them and won't look at it that it's not right.

Cher,
Hope everyone doesn't mind me putting in my 2 cents...
I personally would refrain from a face to face about the situation with the people. In my experience, all this seems to do is make you out to be the pain in the ass neighbor. (believe me...I know this from first hand experience) Most people hate having their stupidity pointed out to them & will react by getting into your face rather than accept what you have to say as genuine concern for others.
Please, do as others suggest...document, document, document. Then when you have enough, turn it over to the proper people & let them take it from there. Your life will be much easier & you will have done what was right.
Sincerly...Liz

That's the same thing my hubby said because he knows me, I generally head in head first like a bull in a china shop. I started getting digital movies today, the darn kid goes right through the stop sign, he didn't even look in either direction, just goes. *sigh* His dad was outside, I could see him but did he even once walk out to the street to watch the kid as he went .... nope. Anyway, I appreciate all the thoughts and ideas, I am going to start taking more pics and movies then take it up to the local pd and show them.

Cher-
Sorry to hear that your neighbors are wreaking havoc on the neighborhood. Sounds like a matter of time before he kills himself or someone else. I wouldn't hesitate a moment to call the cops on him and his careless parents. I really hope they come to their senses soon, but oftentimes it takes a serious accident to wake people up.

we had a kid pulling the same kinda stuff- But we are very rural so he thought he could get away with it- Well after a couple of weeks we figured out aprox. times- let the police know- and low and behold they just happened to bust the kid- He lost his permit (can't drive now till he is 22) his 4 wheeler (impounded) and his fathers insurance company dropped him- well upon further investigation it also seems that some missing golf carts were also found on their property- so no the kid is facing theft charges!!!!!! Sometimes the system does work (oh and the Father was also fined and may face endangerment charges)
