I was not fast enough and our pet Cockatiel flew out the garage door this afternoon. we had him for two and a half years. It was a horrible feeling telling my two boys that i was sorry and trying not to cry with them at the same time. my jaws are killing me from whistling for the last 3 and a half hours. i was the one who has cared for and handled him the most " if i took a nap for an hour sunny would nap for a hour on my hand and not fly to his cage till i woke up ". this is the first time my kids have looked at me like that may i never let them down again. i don't thing i could stand to see that look again.

I know the feeling very well. I had one to and it was sitting on my shoulder when I opened the door...out the went. Very seldom will a person get their bird(s) back........some find new homes and others just fly away.

Aw man! He was a gorgeous bird too. I'm sorry, especially for your kids, that this has happened.

couldn't find the CD with his pic on it. that is one off the net he was even nicer than that one. not such a dark grey i think i'm taking it harder than the kids between the lost of sunny and what they are going through. my oldest son cried himself to sleep tonight. but compared to what others are going through on the board i shouldn't complain

Put an ad in the paper. If he was tame at all someone will probably find him! S

Do what NMrocks said, show your boys you are seriously trying to find him and let them know how much you miss him too. You never know, you may wake up to him in a nearby tree. I hope he comes back to you.

Do the ad thing. At our local grocery store, on their ad board, I saw a post this past week that said someone found a cockatiel near our local elementary school. Obviously that isn't yours, but I mention this so that you know that missing birds may well be found and reported. Several years previously, some fancy bird (excuse my ignorance on bird species) escaped from a local owner and ended up also being found near the local elementary school several days after it flew off -- it was re-united with its owner.
So do a bit of advertising where folks in your neighourhood might see things, and hopefully you will get a positive outcome.

so sorry for your loss- OK I worked in a bird store for many years- so do this!!! Take out an ad- offer a reward- but also state the bird needs VET care- people are less likly to keep a potentially sick animal- also place his cage outside in plain view- with the door open- often times they get a taste of freedom and then want the comfort of home after a while- and don't give up- you live in a warm climate so he can survive for many weeks (heck YEARS) in the wild! Now one other thing- and this is VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!! Please trim his flight feathers if you get him back- it is a painless procedure- that you can do at home- it does have to be redone (once or twice a year) and it does not stop him from flying- it just prevents him from GAINING altitude- if you need directions PM me and I can give you a pretty good step by step- Good luck and I hope he returns soon!

Awww I'm so sorry, that's so sad. I was going to tell you to put his cage out too, I had a parakeet that was sitting on my head when I opened the door and out he flew but not too far. My brother held up his cage and I told him to go inside and he did. It was winter, he could never have survived. Hopefully your sunny will return too.

I'm so sorry... we had birds for years, and this was a constant fear of mine while we had them.
As well as the above, keep in touch with the local animal shelters. A friend of mine used to volunteer at the local PAWS shelter, and they would occassionally get birds people would bring in. Often the poor things would fly like bats out of hell till they were simply too tired to fly, and someone would find them in a bush a mile or so away. Since they would often fly just far enough away that posters/etc wouldn't alert the right neighbors, they would end up in shelters till someone would claim them.
He's a beautiful bird. I hope you get him back. Good luck! Brett
