I know it's some kind of "silicone carbide/metal" material - would this be something that could be "home made" such as using sandings/shavings off of metal? - what about using glass chips/powder? Has anyone tried to replicate this? Just wondering if I could even buy this at Home Depot or other renovation type store Not trying to be cheap or anything, just trying to have alternatives since it's so darn hard getting any of this stuff where I live.

Only other source that I know of is a place that sells sandblasting supplies. Just be careful how the sizes are graded.

Hmmm interesting - do you know if they still call it "grit"? or just ask for some 60/90?

I was looking for some locally (my local shop is a bit pricey and they tend to be limited in what they have) I check Tractor supply, Home Depot, Valu Home Centers, Ace Hardware and a local welding/metal work shop- NO GO- I finally gave up- then a friend of mine says they use Silicon Carbide in the knife plant he works at- But they will not sell any (unless I want to buy 100lbs or more) Plus they only use 120/220 and 1000 so you might have luck checking any metal fabercation plants in you area-
