cher yes this is a brown recluse. after 5 years of having the house professionally treated regularly we are starting to occassionally see a stray wolf spider. up until now it has only been brown recluses and nothing else. and lots and lots of them. apparently we were totally infested with them. i don't know how one of us hasn't been bitten. i think tearing down all those old building last year helped too. i'm guessing, as i'm no spider expert, but the fact that we never had another type in the house until recently makes me think the brown recluse is territorial and eats the others before you see them. so the fact that we are seeing other types now must be a good thing! when i last had the attic bombed, i vacuumed up 40 brown recluses 2 days later. 1 was in the bed dead. they were falling out of the air conditioning vents!

now you see why i insisted your camper got sprayed too. i sure don't want to be visiting you in the hospital with a gaping wound. on the brighter side sands, if they walk in the spray that is around the edges inside they are gone soon enough anyway. shake your clothes before you put them on, shake your towels and don't let the bedcovers hang off onto the floor! you can put double-sided sticky tape on stuff so they can't crawl up. you could use some of those sticky boards too if you wanted and stick them under the cabinets and under furniture in the camper. i can't use those or i'll catch 3 cats in no time flat. those things will hold a snake too you know.

OMG!! I am sooooo afraid of spiders. My husband and son laugh at me. My mother in law had some like that in her house and I haven't been back to visit since then. That's been about 4 years ago. Once I see one, that's it, I'm outta there!!!

just wanted to tell y'all i have vaccuumed 2 rooms so far today and around the baseboards i vaccuumed 15 dead brown recluses - big ones too. the worst room is the guest bedroom that nobody goes in much and the lights stay turned off. hubby fusses because i leave lights on all over the house. the bugman told me they don't like light. i'm going to keep leaving the lights on lol.
the book i ordered pest free property arrived and i'm fixing to try some of the remedies in this book. i don't know what pennyroyal is but it says if i sprinkle it they will never come back. 1st i need to know if its toxic to cats and if not i'm finding some.
what i want to know is where do they come from? he's bombed the attic several times and regularly sprays inside and out. apparently what he sprays works as these were all dead. do they come in from outside? or are they in my walls? we've been working on this for 5 years now.

Geez Kim! You might want to keep your eye out for some DDT. Before ya'll start yelling at me... Do your research on DDT. Used properly it works well and has less negative points than a lot of stuff still being used. The problem with it, is that it WASN'T used properly in the past. I have a stash of it that I use very carefully. It controls my bugs and we have a very healthy population of birds. I don't treat areas that could get into the food chain for them. Mostly inside, sill plate, and foundation of house outside. There have been times when the skeeters have bugged me to the point where I wouldn't mind giving a spray other places but I won't do that. I have to admit though, if West Nile gets to the point where I have to worry about my family I just might. Several case in our county this year, not too bad though. Good luck, Bill

Hope your wife's bite isn't too serious.
Hey Kim, I found this about where they live.
Thorough inspection with a bright flashlight is needed to reveal the location and extent of infestations. Likely hiding places for brown recluse spiders include crevices, corners, and wall-floor junctures (especially behind clutter and furniture) in garages, basements and living areas.
Brown recluse spiders also live behind walls and may inhabit the voids of hollow block foundations. In infested garages, attics, basements and crawl spaces, the spiders, egg sacs, and distinctive shed skins are often found between joists, sills and rafters, as well as under insulation. In living areas, they often inhabit crevices behind and beneath beds and furniture, closets, clothing, shoes, and stored items. When sorting through boxes or materials, wear long sleeves and gloves to avoid being bitten. Brown recluse spiders also reside above suspended ceilings, behind baseboards and woodwork, and within heat ducts and registers.

The Recluse spiders sound terrible. I saw a wolf spider here in MN once, big bugger too, but they are pretty harmless by comparison.

Seems like everyone here has alot of experience with these nasty critters. Glad I don't have the volume of problems seeing them like most of you(lol). Just wanted to let everyone know that the bites are healing up rather well. It's been almost a month now and all of the swelling has pretty much gone away and there is minimal scaring. There is still a small hard spot under the skin that will probably never completely go away, but I can live with that compared to the large 'softball' that it looked like I had swallowed. The antibiotics I have been taking seemed to do a good job. It was still a scary enough situation though and I hope there will be no recurrences. (Four times is enough for me!!) Like I said in the first thread of this post, If you think you have been bitten, get to the doctor immediately. The sooner you get treatment for it, the better off you will be in the long run, with minimal effects. And if necessary, some here may need to seek counseling to rid them of their new fears of spiders . Hope I didn't cause anyone to have nightmares!?! Dave

Hmmmm, looks like you should be ok as long as you don't eat it. lol... Kim, those are the clearest pics that I've ever seen of the brown recluse. Good lord, be careful around your house!! One thing you could do is reduce the number of places for them to hide. Chaulk all of the baseboards in your house. I've never seen one of those spiders in real life, only pics. I do see black widows all the time, but never inside the house. We do have wolf spiders in the house, a bunch of them. They bite, but they don't do any damage. I've never been bit. We also have the "house keepers". They don't bite as far as I know, but they do eat the bad spiders so we leave them alone. We used to have one in the shower, every morning he'd drop down in front of my face (to say good morning I guess) and them he'd go back up. It would always scare to crap out of me because I was never expecting it.
