It's good to know! Every time I see a spider on me while working outside I think about this. WARNING!!! Get it off my arm. Speaking of which I was working outside and this really big spider was trying to get on my arm. I have never seen this kind of spider before, but I got rid of it speedo! I'm glad you posted it as there are a lot of spiders here in Iowa as well.

don brown recluses are just that reclusive. they hunt at night and like areas with little or no activity. for most people, they probably never know they have them but not the case with us. our problem is not the norm by any means. our risk of being bitten may be increased due to the number of spiders we have, but reduced due to our awareness. most people that live here are oblivious to them as they see so few that they may not even know they have them. they are not going to shake out their towel before they dry off, bang their shoes before they stick their foot in, or shake out a blanket they haven't used for 8 mos. our risk since we are well aware is while we are sleeping. this is their prime time of activity. might be why i'm up now huh?

Funny thing Debs, most spiders are actually harmless. The thing is knowing which ones they are.

That's my point as I have no clue which ones are harmful and which aren't. I don't really want to find out either! LOL!

well, after reading thu all these I had to respond --- about a month ago I decided to hire a "guard spider" for my rock room in the barn --- told him he could have one whole corner to set up his traps --- and he did !! I would say it is prob 2' x 3' and about 2' high --hate to know how many feet of silk is there --every which way--- he doesn't come out much except if you throw a fly in the web -- here he is part way out so far he has done a good job and my wife , kids, and bugs have not come in to bother me ! ;D ;D

When I was in Orlando last weekend, my mom found a big ugly black spider in the bag of dogfood. She said "I've never seen anything like this before". I looked at it and told her that it looked like a trapdoor spider but they aren't from around here. We looked up trapdoor spider on the internet, and that's exactly what it was, a Califonia Trapdoor spider. We then logged on to the website from the dogfood bag, and sure enough, the dogfood was from California!! Trapdoor spiders are completely harmless.
