been watching these little guys (cardinals) for the last couple of weeks -- they were in a nest down by my mailbox--today was the day to try leaving home for the first time he needs a couple more days -- there were four of them but this guy was the smallest and he didn't have enough feathers to fly yet---kinda looks like he's having a bad morning!! frown on his beak and the hair sticking straight up so I put him back in the nest for another couple days --- maybe with just one to feed he will grow in a hurry the next tree over is a nest of robins --- they have a couple of weeks to go yet

Awww i never saw little cardinal babies - I can hear momma cry from the tree in my backyard, but no babies
Can you touch them and still have the mother care for them? I thought they abandoned them once they were touched by humans

Awww that was so nice of you to take care of the poor little thing. We rarely see cardinals up here, just in the past few years they've been coming around, slowly moving north. There was a pair that stayed here all last winter at my neighbors and as soon as spring came, they disappeared.

amazing any of them make it to grown. they are so little and vulnerable.
i'm guessing his chances were better to be touched by a human and put back for a few days rather than to stay on the ground and not be able to fly. even if mom rejects him, he can't be too far from fly day if his sibling all flew away.

well, today when i went to get the mail I checked the robins and they were all gone --- guess they weren't that far behind the cardinals --- KD- the robins beaks are more of a white color (cream) and the red birds are a bright yellow and only about half the size of the robins
