I know we have a few members from down that way. My daughter is headed down there the 18th of July with a church group to lend a hand with some clean up work.
Any information that you could pass my way that might be helpful would be appreciated. I'm a little nervous as this will be the longest my little 16 year old baby will be gone from home. Daddy is going to miss her for sure!! Thanks, Bill

hey tell me what you want to know bill. my hubby just got back yesterday from there. i can ask him for you.
he said it is still a mess down there but the debris has been cleaned up. restaurants, gas stations, laundry mats, grocery stores, etc. are up and running. the rebuilding and fix up is way slow - no insurance money for people to get the repairs done. roofs still have blue tarps on them, alot of dumpsters around....the main strip on the ocean is still wiped out and a mess. the rebuilding will be a long road.

As I understand it they will be staying in a church. Just need to know if there are any special things they should bring or things to look out for that might be specific to the area? She just started to drive so we got her a cell phone, as the service I have is national I don't have to worry about roaming. How is the cell phone service there? They have 4-5 days set for work, and a couple of days built in for them to look around the area a little. Should be a good experience to help others and see a little more of our country. I think I am more nervous than her mother is!! Darn kids just grow up too fast!!! Thanks, Bill

hubby said there were no mosquitos. it will be hot, humid so light clothes, sun screen, a hat or viser, sunglasses, a camera. has she had a tetanus shot? she should get one if not just for safety's sake. tennis shoes instead of sandals or flip flops in case any glass might be hidden. tell her if she gets near the beach to not take her shoes off or dig in the sand with her hands. so many items can be hidden in the sand that could cut you. i got cut after hurricane dennis and before katrina on someone's broken floor ceramic that was hidden under the sand. they may not be allowed on the beaches but just in case.... bill she needs to drink plenty of water. hubby says they drank 84 bottles of water in 3 days. you can get bottled water there easily but remind her to drink plenty of it. bill here are some good links that have news updates and pictures: www.gulfcoastnews.com/ www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/kim
