Well for the 4th of July, instead of being a drone and being suckered into the pretty lights and loud noises, i watched a real good movie. "why we fight", veiw a preview here: www.sonyclassics.com/whywefight/Now, i know many are right off gonna disagree with this movie without even watching it. But The main centerpoint of this movie is around the thirty-fourth President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower. And his farewell speech. Now i wasnt even born, but i found this very distrubing a presidant, even in office, and an ex Military high ranking general. Was so displeased with the driection our conutry was going back then with the biuldup of the cold war. And now, to find what he warns Americans of, is now real and taken hold of us and the world. Do you know what percentage of your taxes goes to the Military? according to this site: nationalpriorities.org/auxiliary/interactivetaxchart/taxchart.html Almost 1/3 of my taxes went to military. And the second amount went to debt. Neither of which im am in and stay far away from both. I think all Americans need to wake up and give old Uncle Sam a good slap to the face. And what was most important to our leaders during their last get together(which is getting to be very seldom). Flag buring and Gay marriage. Yes, these are so important to address when neither is a threat to anyones rights or views. How far is Americans willing to go untill we are turly the new roman rebuplic. We continue to let our elected leaders fold to big money and not the will of the people. Is this right in your eyes? If it is, your making money on it and you cant deny it. if it is, and your not making money on it, then give us all facts as to why you decided to think that way. Theres no plan to pull out of Iraq becasue why would you need one when your colonizing the place.(yes 9 new military bases being biult right now in Iraq?) And remember folks, This war is a proven fact that People in office laid plans far before 9/11. And That is not an excusse anymore to justify it. If it were a valid excuse, then A- we wouldnt of created more Terrorism, B-we would of made a general plan by now to pull out. (im not saying to pull out now, but for god sake, talk about it becasue thats what the Iraqes we freed want to talk about.) Now im not looking to fight with anyone here on this thread, thats not whats its for. I posted it so you as a informed American or World Ciziten can follow and watch or read for yourself to make you own conclusion. But if you cant engage in that, then at least ask yourself, Why we fight. The last stance in the movie gave the best answer in my opinion. "Because people are not standing up and saying thats enough". And then we complain when our nations children kill each other. I mean, in a peaceful country, is that what kids do. No, thats what they do in an aggessive conutry. And to put it even more in simple terms; “There is something to that old saying that hate injures the hater, not the hated.” America is the hater, and onlywe created those who hate us. As far as facts, all i have is the movie, which it may not be all fact but it is not fiction either. And the simple idea that we are an Agressive Conutry sticking our thumbs in everones pies around the world for the last 40 years. Is proff to me enough on 9/11 when all those people died. We are only digggin our hole deeper then longer we allow this farse to gon on and riun our moral image around the world. I think to many Americans dont think about anything but America. Well in this board its abuot rocks right? We all share them, they are everywere we go. good ones, bad ones, large ones, gemmy ones. Theres no need to think otherwise, just apply it to people. We are all human, and America alone should make that point more often than not. Becasue we are not a white nation, we are a colored nation, we thrive on deverity and difference. We cant we extend that to the world and stay out of thier pies? (ps, please dont attach my spelling or way i write if you want to attack me, just PM me. To often thats what i find happens when the replier has nothing to say about current events.)

Geez, Shain. Just trying to think of all the countries we have colonized?? Germany, France, Japan, maybe the Philippines?? These were all countries we "did battle" in years ago. Seems to me they are all doing fine without us now. Too much money spent on defense.... I'll agreed with that one. I do wonder how much 9/11 cost this country money wise, not to mention the lives lost then and continuing now. I guess I tend to prefer the fight taking place on foreign soil rather than our own. Senator and Representatives? That's simple! They are for the most part Lawyers!! What would you expect? Set our legal system up so you always have to hire one to do anything. That way if and when they get caught with their pants down they will still have a very lucrative way to make money! Trying to not write this so that it appears RED or BLUE! Everyone likes their "home team". Lets all try not to insult the other guys team. That is never very productive. I am not going to change my team and I'm sure you don't want to change yours!! If you keep that in mind this thread can say at a much more civil level!! Please!!! Take care, Bill

Indeed Bill, civil by all means. I dont see any reason in your post of attack on me. So i extend it further for future readers too. I agree will all you points, and i dont have a side, im indipendant and take sides all over. Though i get called a libral more than offen becasue i use common sence, i think? lol
One thing though we must keep in mind about the Iraq war is our countries faith, or religion. And how it was stated publicly by our presidant, what this war means to him. And the 100's of years us christians have been doing in that region. Its not all bad by a long shot, but that doesnt mean it is not wanted or approved by ones that have just as much right, if not more to protest it. Becasue all the other places America has gotton into did not have this type of old world hate biuldt up.
And the simple fact is, we are despertly running out of oil to power the war machine. Why else would we need to biuld 9 new military bases in Iraq? To protect the people?
And i dont know about you, but if they are lawyers, something is wrong with our system or law then, shouldnt we the people fix it? Isnt there three braches of Gov't, or was i lied to in school?

Well I don't know exactly what I think about the war. I do think the question was it right to go, and is it right to stay are independent. I think we should support those who are at risk, even as we do our civic duty and question, criticize, improve, or even dissent with policy.
But Bill, I think you mistake the European countries we invaded (France) or occupied for a time (Germany) with the place we really colonized in the true sense of the word colonial. Most of Central and some parts of South America - look at the aftermath down there of what American corporations did treating the place like a plantation and American foreign policy backing repressive regimes when working people tried to say "enough." Or the many American Indian Nations - sad story there. OR how about the independent nation of Hawaii, we just took it over. Or Cuba - if we had pulled out like we promised after we invaded, then Castro would never have come to power decades later. Just like the aftermath of European colonization in Africa and Aisa has left long scars and social problems, we in the USA have to own some of the aftermath of our colonizing behavior of the rest of the hemisphere.
Just like the overindulgent parent risks ultimately doing great disservice to their child, so too does the citizen with blind allegiance risk ultimately doing more harm than good.

freeform...and all.
i have no political preference...and dont keep up with left or right views...but i will say this on the irag issue.
i have a dear friend that is a staff sargent in the military in irag at this moment...it is his 2nd tour...he has sent me emails of things that would make us cringe upon hearing it.
he has told me that he will take his squad on an ordered mission...take out the bad guys...or homestead....this may happen during the night or day...and when is all said and done...the people of that village are so thankful that they are crying...and applauding at the same time.
seems that these people firing rockets....and iud's at american forces..and iraqi's...were stealing all the food...housing....their daughters...wifes...and their lives from them.
im not going to agree or disagree with the war in iraq....but my good friend now serving there...at this moment....thinks that he is making a huge difference....1 small town at a time....thats just his opinion.
I am hoping for his safe return from iraq...as i am sure he is...but he would die for 1 of his men...or an iraqi civilian...with no questions asked.
as far as tax dollars going to the military.....glad that north korean missile in development can only reach the west coast when completed....hehehehe...i sure hope they come up with a way to shoot it down before it can reach the east coast. ;D

The whole thing sounds like Viet Nam all over. I was there, and I agree with cpdad. Same thing, except we got to see the news casts. I never did figuire why what we did, and what was shown was unrelated. War is an insane waste of life, materials, philosophies, and everything in between. Lives pro and con, are inalterably affected. I wish I had some answers. I feel however, the world according to Doc might not turn out the way I see it sitting here contemplating. It is good to speak though. Unless when some one next to me is hungry and wanting to learn how to get food, and I am too busy talking.

Just to date myself, I saw Dwight "Ike" & Mamie Eisenhower when they were traveling by whistle stop train...campaigning for president...I was in grade school stood no more than 20 ft. away...A memory I'll never forget...
I also was on a destroyer operating off the Philippines Is. shadowing a Russian submarine durning the Cuban Crisis...a world away but just as scary...That is where I am coming from...
I don't put to much credit in movies as this or the Michael Moore thing...but I have been privilaged to receive copies of e-mails from a younger friend who's son has spent 2 yrs in Iraq and a few months re-upped to finish some of the projects these news media and movies never portray... example: He is a lawyer...working with legal documents in the construction field...He has been in-charge and overseeing hundreds of construction projects...from schools, court houses, jails, hospitals, road construction and water projects.. He has said several times...many of these villages (communities) have come alive and the productivity is just booming...virtually all of Iraq is free and only now are they awakining up to that fact...and on one hand are scared it will fail but they can't wait to reach out to their future... This is never shown...thousands upon thousands of kids fore the first time getting an education...maybe not like ours...but finding out there is a world beyond their own community...
In my honest opinion our greatest threat is the open boarders and the greed and lack of respect within our own nation...we are way to busy to get to really know our neighbors... If we are destroyed, it will come from within...
I try to learn from the past...but I can no longer condemn past decisions made by those that I never had a chance to persuade... People who sit on the sidelines...should put forth their ideas, many that may change this country, rather than...you know what I mean...

I usually don't get into much discussion in these kinds of threads as they tend to get nasty or take 180 and get so far off topic my head spins. They start off about global warming and end up about gay rights. I like to discuss politics as long as it stays civil. If not, there are better places for me to spend my time.
I agree with you, Daniel, 100% that the "American corporation's" have done more to harm the way the rest of the world looks at the USA than anything. When a company sets up business in another country and treats the people there like crap we all take the hit for it!! South America is a very good example of this. Course the CIA sure didn't help much!
As far as the middle east. Most if not all of their problems come as an end result of their religions. Man, if they really followed what their religion was based on I just can't believe they would do the things they do!! *Tongue in cheek*- if all the peoples of the world were atheist's it sure would be a peaceful place!!
With Iraq I wouldn't presume to know what was the best thing to do. I just don't have the knowledge and I really don't think many people do. I just have to put a little faith in those in power and hope that they do the right thing.
As far as our people over there, they have my support 100%!! They put their life's on the line for their country. There are not many people that do that on a day to day basis!!
I like the way you think, Shain. People that just follow the "party line" be it Red or Blue are just sheep (not that sheep are bad!!). To get locked into a single way of thinking not good. Reminds me of the saying about a person that does the exact same thing over and over, each time expecting something different to happen!! Bill

Cpdad you make a very important point. However soldiers are trained to do what they do so well. Weather they choose to like it or not. That is what they choose as a life and are paid to do. Money effect more minds than we all admit in modern times, more so in America than anywere else. And theres no dout in my mind there are people truly being helped, daily over there becasue of our presence. And i know they are thanked turly by all, including me.
How many know studant loans just became even more difficult for young people to get? And when they do, they come out of school in more debt than they went in. Why is this you suppose. Or the fact the enlistment age is now upto 42 years old if im right? These are not signs only of a complaincent people not wanting to fight. These are signs that we all know fighting is rarly the anwser to modern day geo-politics. And most dont go to help someone else, they join to help themself.
IN the movie they talk about these points, as this movie just came out on video and was done in the latter of 2005. ONe thing that got me was the idea of young people joining(ive gotton close twice since i been out of school, so it really concerns me, and my age falls under the "new" draft age). BUt how can you join an instuition that sells you on all the self indulgence of money for school, training, getting paid, traveling the world, etc, etc. When the concept is based soley on self sacrafice? Am i missing something here?
To me, that further proves its stupidy when we all know we were lied to going into the Iraq war. The world was lied to, and it continues because most of Americans dont care, i feel. What can we do? Excpet start talking more about our system of corruption. That will lead to fixing it, regaurdless of what war we are fighting when we do fix it. We all know it really needs some fixing or America wont be the land of the free anymore.
North Korea is a threat, but all i ask is for Americans to stand outside their own shoes for once. Look in at ourselfs and ask why. You'll be surpise more people come back with the respond of I dont know why we are there, or why we fight. ANd dont forget the real reason they are testing their missles right now. Hello, we just tested some of the biggest and most desturctive bombs without going nucluar to date. Again, they are reacting to us, not acting like wild and crazy loons out to kill everyone.
How can you teach someone to feed themselves without using words frist?

Hey Doc! I too am from the "Senior graduation trip to SE Asia" generation. Have you read much of how the people over there are doing now. All those years and years of fighting. This country then that country trying to win a war there. If I am not mistaken I think that their economy is having more of an effect as to what is controlling the country than anything/anyone has in the last 100 years. More and more tourism, who would have thunk it!! You sure notice that China hasn't messed with Hong Kong much. They know enough not to kill that golden goose!! Take care, Bill

freeform...and all.
my best friend is paid to do what he does..that is correct...but it eats him up inside to do what he has to do...he has told me that if the people they engage would just come out of their place of hiding when engaged by them...no shots would be fired.
when a shot is fired by the enemy...the training takes over...and they go into survival mode...kill before being killed...at least that is what he is using as a crutch at this time.
not sure about the student loans...i dont keep up with a lot of that stuff....but i will say....that my son is most likely to take some type of loan....military related...not sure if it will be a loan or a military paid for item...thats in the future.
he is only 12 years old...and is in some sorts a military historian....he collects military memorabilia...consisting of medals..ribbons..hats..uniforms...and all things in between...and can tell us just about anything related to a war...any war that we have been a part of.
as far as the recruitment....you are correct...my father in law...has been asked many times to come back and train people in whatever field he was involved in.....he refuses to say to us what he did...or was involved in...but his health wont allow him to do what they would like him to do...so this i take is a problem for the military.
my father in law...told me 20 years ago...that if i ever laid a hand on his daughter...he could hit me between the eyes with a bullet from over a mile and a half away....so we kinda know what he did in the military....and his gun will be giving to my son....but no one has seen it.
this doesnt answer any of your questions at all....just my thoughts and venting....as far as north korea...i just watched a special on cnn.....it will be back at 8 tomorrow night ...watch it.
glad this is civil...no harm meant at all...just good meanings intended

I wonder if I knew your father in law. The song sounds the same. If he had a gun, .50 caliber and up, I wonder. If he had a rifle, below .50 caliber, he was either before or after. Probably after. I doubt he could hit between the eyes at 2500yds, but if he is like me, real close. I am building my wife a Palma Rifle, in 6-08 Ackley Improved for punching holes in paper at 600yds with iron sights. She is pretty excited. She really wants to take up the sport. In Palma, we measure shots in 1/4" groups at 600yds. Her rifle at that range should be able to put 5rds in a 3/8" circle off a bench rest. Like a Rail Gun. It will probably take her the rest of her life to get into 10" at that range. The cases are custom. She will have to make her own. She will have to swage her bullets. There are no manufacturers who make any components. It is a single shot. Even if it is stolen, no one could use it but her. Her name is on the barrel, the rounds are unavailable, and the stock fits only her. Even the sights are custom for her only. At these matches, you have 20 minutes to fire off 20 rounds. You have to have breath control, body control, neural control, understand ballistics inside and out, wind and thermal effects, barrel harmonics, thermal interaction with sight pictures. It is pretty involved. The rifle itself weighs 18lbs. Not your classic assault weapon. The barrel has been cryo dipped for heat expansion. It literally changes the steel. She hopes someday to compete in the Creedmore. The bullets are solid copper, hydrolic swaged. Not your K-Mart blue light special.

doc...all i know is this...and this is on his words... and he says little
he would hit me between the eyes at a mile and half...if he had too...and would do it if i ever hit his daughter...he actually told me that....true or not...i dont know.
he is a secretive man...he says only what he thinks to need to be said....anything else ..he just doesnt say a word...kinda like a robot.
he talks to my son a lot....but even my son will not say what his papa says to him....and we would never ask him what was said to him...we know better...and our son knows this.
but we know this...what ever it means in military terms....he was a recon person..if that makes sense....he has said he was the first 1 in...and only fired at certain things...thats it...thats all he has ever said.
but he can tell us how much and which way the wind is blowing by sticking out his tongue....so he says.
once again....not sure if this makes sense.....just what he lets us know.

Its true, When i post stuff to a local group about opinions. I often get shot down with replies about , "why don't you just shut up", or all you do is talk about what were doing wrong". And in the last case, a person engage me directly, when my point was about sharing your experience or story to further a real discussion. IN the end, we had to take it off group, because all we were doing was calling each other names. He finally did tell me a story and got my point, and apologized because he was acting like a child(though he was 54). Since then we have not called each names. But i also really post to that group anymore because people don't ask. They only shout.
This is a generational issue. And i don't take merit from any movie. But, when a movie used factual things like D.I. farewell address. I cant help but ask myself again. Yes, it bias because thats what the movie wants you to do. But it gives more merit than wondering why it is so.
I mean, i want to believe and support my president. Even when i never voted for him. But does that mean he can lie and lie, and lie, and lie. And i should still respect him? For anyone that respects a liar, please raise your hands. Because our president has lied, more than once.
The point about our current war is pacifism. because we are the creators of it. We are not, and this is a fact. The victims of this war. WE ARE ITS INSTUTION.
And another thing that secures it for me revolves around my Granddad on my mothers side. He was a Well decorated Lutienite of the Second world war. But i know one thing, what it made him. He was a very quite man when i was growing up. But i know differently for my mom and her sisters who he was when they were growing up. Lets just say, all his kids ran away from home at least once. And is CPS was around back then, he would of lost his children very fast because of his anger.
And when he passed the military pestered us for over 8 months because they wanted to lay his body in Arlington. Well, that is really the only thing in his will. Not to be buried there. Why is that? I still ask myself and my mother and aunts about why. UNfoructnally he never talked about why, and from what very little info the military would release on his career had to do with him giving testimony during a court marital of a friend. There were some other details about who he saved a building a French Diplomats and had to disarm a bomb when he wasn't skilled for that. Which was part of the court marital, because the guy that was skilled was the one being tried.
History is important, because its really the only Culture Americans have. Outside of being a warful nation. But the one thing that rings more true than ever for me during current events is the facts. And we are allowing our leaders to do and say what ever they want. Allowing themselves high pay raises, trampling the constitution and oh ya. Don't forget about the whole Delay thing. A Christian conservative who was forcing women to have abortions, and using slave labor all for the sake of a dollar.
Sure, i have the freedom to be an ass and attack anyone i feel its my right to do. But i know that wont solve or allow for any progression. So again, i extend the idea to always look in at oneself before looking at others. And to not be so afraid like your government wants you to be. And to ask yourself why we fight. Because its not about our freedom or another's freedom under known political screwup. Its about whats right and whats wrong.
And i feel very passionate about the fact we Americans create excuses after the fact. A winner will win a war before the attack begins. A loser will go to war, and seek to win it.(thats a quote from someone, its not exact but its the best i could remember) Preventing measures start at home, not abroad. once we can calm the hate within ourself here, then we can worry about freeing other people around the world.
But current events will only get worse when our war machine is allowed to continue to trample the rights of every human. Not just Americans. Because again, if we are truly doing right over there, more terrorist would of not been created. And we would not be building 9 new military bases over there. I am a strategist, and that only means one thing people. We are there to stay, we are not going anywhere, when we told them and ourself that is not the case. Why else wont our leaders even talk about that? because if they do i think a New American revolution would take hold. because if a leader knows outright its will be a lie, ands its so obvious. They wont talk about it. They will try and stay as far away from a sentence of it so not to lose their high paying job. Please wake up. Am i dreaming?

cp, it sounds like your son has a great grandfather. That is important. I bet they share a deep love. When I was growing up, I had some very important parents who were always somewhere else. I found survivors from WWII, some from the "camps", who all were self made. We would spend hours talking, they showed me things I had never seen. They gave me books, had me listen to music from the classic composers, they taught me to dream, and how to walk towards that dream. One step at a time. It sounds like Grandpa is teaching son things he couldn't teach you. You were too close. It also sounds like he is a real father to his daughter. It must have been hard to let her go. I bet he is one hard nut to be around. Good for all of you. I bet your son will be able to use what he is learning down the road. You never know.
